Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain can play a significant role in combating the pervasive problem of counterfeit medicines and if implemented effectively, technology can offer a multitude of solutions to tackle counterfeiting in the pharmaceutical industry, says Dr. Amit Deshpande, founder and director of health and wellness brand Activist.

In an interaction on the menace of counterfeit on Indian pharma industry and the brands, he said that one such solution involves the adoption of track-and-trace technologies and mass serialisation using QR codes. These measures can prevent the distribution of counterfeit medications, preventing their access to domestic and global markets.

“Artificial intelligence technology can also automate the monitoring and verifying of drug quality at various stages of the supply chain. AI algorithms can swiftly identify and eliminate potential counterfeit products, safeguarding public health and safety,” he said.

Blockchain technology also holds immense potential to combat counterfeit drugs. Its decentralised nature can ensure robust protection against substandard medicines throughout the supply chain.

“Blockchain stores data across a distributed network of nodes. Each entry is encrypted and even the slightest modification requires verification from all nodes, ensuring a tamper-proof system. This robust approach enables the detection of fraudulent activities and facilitates complete transparency within the supply chain for pharmaceutical companies,” he added.

The rising volume of counterfeit drug trafficking calls for collaborative endeavour to raise awareness, bolster regulatory frameworks, fortify supply chain security, and enhance authentication technologies. These measures are crucial for upholding the reputation of India’s pharmaceutical sector which relies on quality and trust to sustain.

To ensure safety of its drugs from counterfeiting, the company implemented various stringent measures including sourcing its ingredients globally with great care and carrying out operations in a GMP-certified facility, within a secure environment.

“Additionally, our facility undergoes periodic inspections conducted by the FDA to ensure adherence to regulatory standards. We have also implemented stringent in-process checks, tests, and quality standards to uphold the highest level of product excellence,” he said. Activist brand of modern-day health supplements based on traditional herbal ingredients, is a sub brand under the company Agnivesh Healthcare Centre Pvt Ltd, which manufactures nutraceuticals.

One of the company’s strategies to combat counterfeiting involves regular monitoring of the security of its supply chain, while also incorporating unique design elements into its packaging to prevent the possibility of counterfeiting.

“We also believe in raising awareness among consumers and healthcare professionals to combat the issues of counterfeit medicines. We collaborate with healthcare organisations and regulatory bodies, conduct awareness campaigns, and distribute educational materials to enlighten individuals to help them make informed decisions regarding their medications. These comprehensive approaches help us strengthen the fight against counterfeit drugs,” he added.
