Even as the country is battling with Covid-19 and people remain at risk of contracting the virus, experts in Ayurveda have opined that Ayurveda is a good remedy for treating patients with coronavirus infection, whether it is mild or moderate.

Experts claim that the efficacy of the treatment is on the basis of their experiments and experiences since the spread of the infection in India.

According to them, if Ayurveda medications are administered to patients tested positive, their symptoms will not develop into further complications. This phenomenon was proven in treatments already carried out in many centres which are dealing with cases by following the guidelines and protocols issued by the government.

According to Dr P M Varrier, managing trustee of the Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala in Kerala, Ayurveda is a good remedy for the Covid-19 care management.

Dr Varrier, who is also a member of the state Covid care management committee, said that several people with Covid positivity and in home isolation are being treated through ayurvedic system and they become negative without developing their symptoms into further complications. The hospital at Kottakkal has not set up any in-patient facility or special ward for the positive cases in order to isolate them into separate area. The patients stay at their own homes and take advice from the treating doctors.

Talking about the efficacy of Ayurveda medicines in curing corona like virus infections, Dr. Varrier said the state Ayurveda drugs control department has prepared a list of one lakh people who got treatments from various Ayurveda hospitals in the last one year and completely recovered from the illness and stay without any post Covid symptoms. The department has submitted the list to the government, but due to some reasons it was not publicized. He said Ayurveda treatment is being done by several states in India for managing Covid patients and also many countries follow the system as a remedy for corona virus infection.

Dr S Sajikumar, managing director of the Dhathri Ayurveda Hospital said the ‘Indukaantham’ decoction is a popular medicine in Ayurveda for viral infection and immunity enhancement. He has treated more than 20 positive cases of Covid and the patients recovered completely from the illness and so far there is no report of any adverse post-Covid symptoms. Dr Saji who headed the Care Keralam cluster previously, shared the information that chyavanaprasam, indukaantham decoction, sudarsanam tablet and vilwadi tablet are the major medicines being provided to the patients with corona virus infection. In addition to this, as per the guidelines of the Central Ayush Ministry, aswagandha powder/tablet and Gulloochi (amruthottharam) tablets are also given to the patients in treatment.

He said Unon Ayush Ministry has already endorsed 140 research studies of indukaantham decoction which includes 13 ingredients including dasamoolam and the drug can be highlighted as an ayurvedic preparation for the novel coronavirus disease.

According to Dr A M Anwar, managing director of the Raha Ayurveda Hospital in Ernakulam, although Ayush ministry has issued guidelines for treatment of mild and moderate symptoms, no significant interest is taken up by the government for promoting the Ayurveda treatment in Kerala. He has claimed that he treated and cured more than 200 positive cases of Covid 19 including his parents in last one year. His hospital has all the facilities with modern technology support to monitor the patients while in treatment and also in post-treatment period. He has set up a special ward for Covid patients and a state-of-the-art ICU facility for other cases.
