In a stunning revelation, a wave of counterfeit reference material certificates has inundated the market, raising serious concerns among industries reliant on accurate standards and measurements.
National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) has urged laboratories and organizations to exercise utmost caution and diligence in verifying the authenticity of reference material certificates.
"The proliferation of counterfeit reference material certificates underscores the urgent need for enhanced vigilance and stringent verification protocols within the industry. Stakeholders are urged to remain vigilant and collaborate with regulatory authorities to combat fraudulent practices and uphold the highest standards of quality and integrity. The emergence of these fake certificates has sent shockwaves through the scientific and industrial communities, as they inaccurately claim compliance with established standards, notably regarding accreditation and traceability to SI units," according to an NABL official.
"One glaring example involves the "Indo Global Research Laboratory," which has been exposed for falsely asserting accreditation as per ISO 17034 from a foreign accreditation body. This egregious misrepresentation not only jeopardizes the credibility of the laboratory but also undermines the integrity of the entire supply chain," the official added.
Key checkpoints have been identified to ensure the legitimacy of these critical documents.
It is required to verify that the reference material producer (RMP) is accredited in accordance with ISO 17034 standards, ensuring adherence to rigorous quality control measures.
There is a need to confirm that the accreditation status of the RMP is covered under ILAC MRA arrangements or recognized regional arrangements, signifying compliance with international standards.
It has to be ensured that reference materials maintain metrological traceability to SI units, guaranteeing accuracy and reliability in measurements and analyses.
There is a need to assess whether the reference material is suitable for its intended use in specific measurement processes, avoiding potential inaccuracies or discrepancies.
There is a need to check the validity period of the reference material, avoiding the use of outdated or expired certificates that could compromise the integrity of results.
