Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in a recent
development, has issued orders regarding formation of an Expert Group to
foresee the regulations with regards to High Fat, Sugar and Salt
present in ‘all foods’ available in market places. According to sources,
the first meeting of this Expert Group is scheduled for July 17.
The
order says that the subject of adverse effect caused by the food, which
is - High on Fat, Sugar and Salt (HFSS) - commonly referred to as ‘Junk
Food,’ on the health of consumers has been a matter of serious concern
and needs deeper analysis.
In regards to that, the FSSAI has
decided to constitute an 11-member Expert Group on Salt, Sugar & Fat
in Food Products in India. Besides packaged foods, the committee will
recommend on prescription of regulations for display of Fat, Sugar and
Salt in food products sold or served in eating joints or catering
facilities, as well.
The order says, “The High Court of Delhi has
directed FSSAI to issue directions or guidelines on the subject qua the
school going children in PIL filed by the Uday Foundation for
Congenital Defects and Rare Blood Groups v/s Union of India and Ors.
While the said guidelines are being issued separately, it has been
observed that the subject needs deeper examination qua all foods. It
has, therefore, been decided to constitute an Expert Group on Salt,
Sugar & Fat in Food Products in India.”
According to FSSAI,
the terms of reference of the group will be to advise FSSAI on the
health risk associated with high intake of Fat, Sugar and Salt, current
dietary intake of Fat, Sugar and Salt in Indian population, current
levels of Fat, Sugar and Salt in Indian food products in the market and
potential health risks to vulnerable groups from consumption of high
levels of Fat, Sugar and Salt in Indian food products.
The expert
group will further provide recommendations to FSSAI on healthy dietary
intake of Fat, Sugar and Salt, regulatory limits for Fat, Sugar and Salt
in food for manufacturing, processing, import, and marketing. Besides,
this committee will also suggest and recommend on how such products need
to be labelled.
