Indian healthcare sustains its quality and affordability with generic medicines mandate. This, according to Dr. Sujit Paul, Group CEO, Zota Healthcare which is a drug development, manufacturing and marketing company, is perceived as humble alternatives to branded drugs, which has triggered a seismic shift in India's healthcare sector.
Generic medicines have become an important part of India's healthcare system. These are equivalent in safety and efficacy to their branded counterparts. Generic medication is a catalyst for a paradigm shift in the Indian pharmaceutical landscape.
Government initiatives like the Jan Aushadhi scheme have further advanced the cause of affordable generic medicines, broadening healthcare access to marginalized communities, he added.
By 2025, the Indian pharma is expected to grow to US$ 57 billion, with the generic medicine segment playing a pivotal role in this expansion. This surge, propelled by the growing recognition of the value offered by generic medications, is reshaping the traditional pharmaceutical landscape, said Dr Paul.
The affordability of generic medicines does not entail a compromise on quality. Ensuring that generic drugs meet stringent quality standards is non-negotiable. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) play pivotal roles in overseeing quality, pricing, and availability ensuring affordable and safe access to generic medicines, particularly in underserved regions. Vigilant quality control measures are in place to combat substandard or counterfeit drugs. Raising awareness among healthcare professionals and patients about the efficacy and reliability of generic medicines is an ongoing process, said Dr Paul.
The way forward lies in continued investment in research and development, fostering innovation that can lead to cost-effective healthcare solutions. Promoting the use of generic medicines and expanding its footprint in the healthcare sector will remain pivotal in making quality healthcare accessible to all. In fact, integration of generic medicines has become a pivotal element of India's healthcare system. The convergence of quality, affordability, and accessibility has significantly broadened the spectrum of healthcare options. Therefore, the role of generic medicines in India's healthcare system is pivotal, and their impact is poised to shape the future of healthcare accessibility for the nation's vast population, said Dr Paul.
