With increased scrutiny in stability and bioavailability studies, the Indian pharma and nutraceutical sectors are opting for LipoDuo technology. This is because the two sectors are constantly evolving, with new innovations driving the development of more effective and stable products.
A promising advancement in recent years is LipoDuo technology, a platform that combines liposomal delivery with freeze-drying processes. This dual approach not only ensures superior encapsulation of active ingredients but also enhances product stability, shelf life, and versatility in formulation options, making it an ideal solution for developing formulations to develop advanced products, said S Suresh, head -sales & marketing, Samarth Biorigins LLP. Currently, LipoDuo technology is used to enhance the delivery and stability of key ingredients such as vitamin C, glutathione, iron, B-complex vitamins, and vitamins A, D, E, and K. At the heart of LipoDuo technology is the liposomal delivery system, which encapsulates active ingredients within lipid vesicles, mimicking the body’s natural cell membrane structure. It protects sensitive ingredients from degradation, enhances their bioavailability, and allows for targeted delivery to specific tissues or organs. In the near future, we plan to expand our portfolio to include minerals like calcium, magnesium, and zinc, as well as powerful plant extracts such as Ashwagandha, Silymarin, and Astaxanthin. It can be applied to both water-soluble and lipid-soluble ingredients, making it a valuable platform for a wide range of product formulations, he added. However, creating high-quality liposomes requires precision. The key lies in selecting the right ratio of active ingredients to phospholipids, a process that is product-specific and must be established using various analytical parameters. Some of the best parameters to check include ensuring over 50% encapsulation efficiency which is crucial to achieve optimal results. Measuring the size of liposomes ensures effective absorption. Simulated gastric and intestinal conditions are used to determine how well the liposomes release the active ingredients once ingested. Freeze-drying, or lyophilization, removes water from the formulation without the use of heat, making it ideal for preserving the structure and function of temperature-sensitive active ingredients and their lipid vesicles. This method ensures that the product retains its integrity and stability during storage, resulting in a longer shelf life and a stable powder format that can easily be incorporated into a variety of formulations whether it be tablets, capsules, effervescent powders, gummies, syrups, or liquid forms, said Suresh. Following encapsulation and stability testing, LipoDuo technology products undergo extensive in vivo and in vitro studies. Animal models are used to understand how effectively the liposomes deliver active ingredients and how well the body absorbs them.
Human cell line models from various organs are employed to evaluate cell uptake, cell proliferation, and other critical parameters. Wound healing assays are one such test that provides insight into the potential therapeutic effects of certain formulations.
Human clinical trials are conducted to assess the bioavailability, pharmacodynamic effects, he stated. LipoDuo products are manufactured in state-of-the-art facility equipped with advanced equipment. Samarth Biorigins, is focusing on innovation in nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals through with LipoDuo technology. This platform helps to develop stable, effective, and bioavailable products, Suresh said.
