Maha govt constitutes Paramedical Council to regulate paramedical profession and practice

The Maharashtra government has constituted Paramedical Council to
facilitate implementation of Maharashtra Paramedical Council Act aiming
at regulating the profession and practice of clinical laboratory science
and technology in the state.
The Council will prepare and
maintain a state register of paramedical professionals including
laboratory technicians, radiology technicians, plaster technicians and
other paramedics who assist doctors in hospitals and laboratories.
As
per the Act which was notified by the state government on July 1, 2017,
every person who possesses any of the recognised paramedical
qualifications of Bachelor of Paramedical Technology (BPMT), or Diploma
in Medical Lab Technology (DMLT) specified in the Schedule and who
desires to get registered as paramedical shall make application to the
registrar along with the proof of qualification and on payment of fee as
may be prescribed, be entitled to have his name entered in the state
register.
There are 21 paramedic professions identified under
the Act including laboratory technicians, radiographic technicians,
radiotherapy, cardiology, neurology, blood transfusion, optometry,
plaster, anaesthesia, perfusionist, and operation theatre technicians.
The
registration will be valid for five years. The council was constituted
following a notification issued by the Medical Education and Drugs
Department in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of
section 3, sub-section (1) of section 4 and sub-section (1) of section 5
of the Act.
The Council was constituted with effect from
October 18, 2017 comprising of 17 members including six ex-officio
members and 11 members nominated by the government. The ex-officio
members are director of medical education and research, director of
health services, director of Ayurveda, vice-chancellor of Maharashtra
University of Health Sciences or his nominee, president of Maharashtra
Medical Council and president of Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine.
The
members nominated by the government under clause (vi) of sub-section 4
of the Act include Kumar Patil from Ahmednagar, Nasrin Faiz Patankar
from Ratnagiri, Dr Shashikant V Khaire from Nagpur, Shahaji Shrirang
Mane from Sangli and Sanjay H Sarode from Akola.
Members
nominated by the government under proviso to clause (vii) of sub-section
(1) of section 4 of the Act are Dhananjay Yashwant Kulkarni from Nagpur
revenue division, Shripad Ramchandra Karandikar from Konkan revenue
division, Umeshchandra Prakash Sonar from Nashij revenue division,
Vinayak Pandurang Desai from Pune revenue division, Vivek A from
Amravati revenue division and Rajabhau Garud from Aurangabad revenue
division.
