Merchant exporters have called for a collaborative approach involving the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), ministry of health and family welfare (MOHFW), ministry of external affairs (MEA), and ministry of commerce (MOC) to promote global acceptance of Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) approved products.
“A joint task force, comprising representatives from these bodies, would work together to promote the acceptance of IP approved products in smaller countries,” informed Sandeep Modi, joint secretary of the Federation of Pharmaceutical and Allied Products Merchant Exporters (FPME).
He further added that the pharmaceutical industry in India is facing significant challenges in exporting IP approved products due to their lack of acceptance in many countries. This situation hinders the export of products in small quantities, as batch sizes do not meet the requirements of these countries. Industry leaders are now calling for a concerted effort by a joint task force to address these challenges and promote the acceptance of IP products globally.
“Many countries still do not accept IP approved products, making it difficult to export products in small quantities. The primary issue lies in the batch sizes, which do not align with the requirements of these countries, creating barriers for Indian exporters,” Modi further explained.
Industry experts have further suggested that the joint task force should communicate with various trade bodies such as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the East African Community (EAC) to advocate for the acceptance of IP standards. This effort would involve highlighting the quality and safety of IP products and addressing any concerns or misconceptions these countries may have.
Exporters have emphasized the need for uniform acceptance of IP products to streamline the export process. This would enable them to meet the demands of smaller countries without having to alter batch sizes, thereby reducing costs and increasing efficiency. Government representatives recognize the importance of promoting IP products globally and are committed to supporting the industry through policy advocacy and diplomatic channels.
A senior industry official stated, "The proposed joint task force would undertake the following actions like engage with trade bodies and initiate dialogues with CARICOM, EAC, and other relevant trade bodies to advocate for the acceptance of IP products. It should highlight the rigorous quality assurance processes that IP products undergo to meet international standards. It should also work with smaller countries to address any specific concerns or regulatory issues they may have regarding IP products and streamline the export processes for IP products to make it easier for Indian pharmaceutical companies to meet the demands of smaller markets.”
