A new generation of analytical instruments will soon be hitting the market and these will enable remote operation and diagnosis, automated sample management and AI based analysis, according to Gautam Rajan, president, Indian Analytical Instruments Association (IAIA).
Rajan added that globally, most companies have taken a hit on their toplines and bottom-lines given the situation, which has also spurred industry to innovate their products – specially with regards to digital connectivity, monitoring and self-diagnostics.
“In India, given the government’s acceleration of local manufacturing, we will see more and more players offering products that have value addition imbibed locally,” stated Rajan.
He further stated that given the challenges of multi-state regulations that the industry faced, there will be either a combination of service localisation and remote support being offered to customers or supply and service contracts will need to be restructured to allow for such eventualities.
Regarding challenges on industry perspective, Rajan added, “Depending on what area ones looks at, there are different issues. For example, analytical instrument suppliers to the public sector in India continue to experience difficulty with increasingly complicated procurement processes and rules and payment delays. Some temporary reliefs were granted but they are likely to end come December 31, 2021.”
“On the other hand, companies selling primarily to the private sector are faced with significant delays in payments. Managing cash flows is also a significant issue affecting the industry today in both situations. Finally, quality of skilled resources in this industry is a huge challenge. Since this has traditionally been non-IT kind of industry, newer talent coming in over the last few years has been limited. Skill development will be critical for the industry going forward,” added Rajan.
IAIA, an exclusive professional body, was formed in 1996 with a vision to promote, encourage and develop the growth of the analytical instruments industry. The primary objective is to create and share knowledge leading to better relationships between all players.
The IAIA has successfully organised exhibitions & conferences from the year 1996 to 2000 under the banner ‘Anacon’ and subsequently from 2003 till date has organised the analytics Anacon India Trade Show and Conference in association with Messe Munchen of Germany. It has over 80 members which include companies like Thermo Fisher Scientific, Agilent, Waters, Shimadzu, Perkin Elmer, Cryogen and Instruments, Metrohm, Skytech, Medispec, Spinco Biotech, Toshvin Instruments, Anamed Instruments, Indtech Instruments, to name a few.
