NIS ties up with NBA for sharing traditional knowledge and preservation of herbal & natural resources

The National Institute of Siddha (NIS) at Tambaram near Chennai has reached an agreement with the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) for sharing traditional knowledge and preservation of herbal and natural resources.
As part of this agreement, research scholars of the national office of the bio diversity authority visited the headquarters of the National Institute of Siddha at Tambaram on July 21 to learn about the practices and utilization of traditional medicines, and preservation of medicinal resources.
"More than 30 newly joined scholars, scientists and forest officers visited our institute and learnt the activities of preserving traditional knowledge used in the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of physical and mental illness," said Dr M Meenakumari, director of the NIS.
They visited the traditional knowledge library of the institute, herbal garden, research laboratories and the OP and IP wards after a discussion with the scientific officers and directors in the hospital and the institute. NIS, the director said, is part of the NBA and the director is a member of the governing body of the biodiversity authority.
Recently, the NBA conducted one exhibition in Chennai showing various projects and programmes for the preservation of traditional knowledge in health systems. NIS also participated and exhibited the unique therapies of Siddha using traditional knowledge and practice. Dr. Meenakumari said, as per the MoU the national institute of Siddha will preserve the natural medicinal plants and marine products used in the preparation of medicines. Both the institutes will join hands together for research and preservation of herbal garden and plant cultivation. She said the second phase of discussion will be held in August at the NBA office.
NIS is a centre of academics, research and clinical practices based on traditional knowledge and natural medicines.
