In pharmaceutical logistics, where sustainability is sometimes overlooked, the growing favor for ocean freight paves the way for a greener and more eco-friendly healthcare system, said Vaibhav Vohra, managing director, Continental Carriers.
The challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, increasing fuel costs, and a global emphasis on sustainability have steered pharmaceutical companies towards a notable shift from air travel to ocean freight. Technological advancements are pivotal in enhancing these efforts, showcasing a dedicated commitment to environmental responsibility. This shift not only solves logistical challenges but also supports sustainability goals by reducing carbon footprints, he added.
Today in India, the frequent temperature changes every few miles pose a significant challenge for pharmaceutical product handling. The globalization and increasing complexity of pharmaceutical supply chains, coupled with greater outsourcing and innovative approaches to reaching patients, emphasize the need for resilience against potential disruptions. Unfortunately, there is a lack of quality control infrastructure, particularly in the storage and transportation processes, intensifying the risks for patients relying on these medicines, he noted.
While leading pharmaceutical companies have successfully restructured their supply chains to drive growth and manage costs, there is a critical need for a comprehensive assessment and proactive planning to address associated risks. Without such measures, companies risk significant losses. To ensure a smooth supply chain, pharmaceutical companies must adopt comprehensive and efficient planning strategies, Vohra told Pharmabiz.
At Continental Carriers, we take full responsibility for shipments, proactively mitigating challenges and safeguarding the integrity of pharmaceutical products throughout their journey. We also ensure the safe journey of pharmaceutical products, collaborating to provide reliable and efficient deliveries, he said.
As the 'Pharmacy of the World,' India’s pharmaceutical logistics market reached US$ 227.45 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach US$ 446.61 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 8.8%. This growth is propelled by the increasing demand for pharmaceuticals, a trend expected to persist. As the industry continues expanding to meet these demands, India is a key influencer in the global pharmaceutical logistics arena, said Vohra.
