Pharma industry facing coal crunch, bulk drug production may be hit hard in India: BDMA

The pharma and bulk drug industry in Telangana and all over India is facing acute coal crunch, because of which the bulk drug manufacturing sector in the country may be hit hard and this may snowball into various adverse healthcare emergency situations in the country.
According to reliable sources from Bulk Drug Manufacturers Association (BDMA), there is drastic reduction in coal mining in Telangana and elsewhere in India and the states and Central governments are considering only power sector on priority and ignoring the pharma and health industry in allocating the coal. This kind of un-mindful strategy will have adverse repercussions as it will have direct impact on the API and bulk drug production in the country, which in turn will affect the supply of essential medicines in India.
"Medical requirements of the people must be considered on top priority and government must allocate the coal to the pharma industry along with the power sector. If the bulk drug production will be stalled and supply of essential medicines will hit hard in the country which may lead to an emergency situation similar to Sri Lanka. We request the states and Central governments to allocate coal to the pharma sector and avoid any untoward health emergency situation in the country," informed Eshwar Reddy, executive director, BDMA.
Like in all other industrial sectors, coal is used as the most important fuel used in the bulk drug manufacturing industry also which is available at a very low cost. However, due to drastic reduction in coal mining in recent days this has led to severe shortages and has hit the production of bulk drug manufacturing in the country.
"If coal shortage continues, industry will be forced to look at alternative power supply sources and obviously that will have additional cost and impact on industry revenue and this in turn may lead to increase in prices of medicines and burden the poor patients and people. Before things go out of hand, we urge the governments to allocate coal to the pharma sector and protect the bulk drug industry," observed the BDMA executive director.
