SFDA collaborates with Pharmexcil to supply life-saving drugs in pain management, bacterial & viral infections

Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has collaborated with the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) to supply life-saving drugs in pain management, cancer, hypertension, bacterial and viral infections, among others.
Saudi Arabia had a market size of $7.8 billion in 2021 for pharmaceuticals which include patented drugs of about $4.13 billion, generics at $2.87 billion and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs of $780 million.
The list of drugs include ampicillin and sulbactam combination used to treat bacterial infections, acetaminophen + codeine combination help relieves moderate to severe pain, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) for the treatment of pain and fever due to various causes, albendazole for the treatment of a variety of parasitic worm infections, activated charcoal is to treat poisoning. It is also used for high cholesterol, hangovers, and stomach upset.
Medicines also include aciclovir, also known as acyclovir, is an antiviral medication. It is primarily used for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, chickenpox, and shingles, amifostine (ethiofos), a cytoprotective adjuvant used in cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy, amiloride, a type of diuretic (water pill) that helps reduce the amount of water in the body by increasing the flow of urine, which helps lower the blood pressure.
“The Saudi Arabia Embassy in New Delhi hosted a roundtable interactive meeting of Prof. Hishan S Aljadhey, CEO of SFDA with leading Indian pharma companies in November 2023 in New Delhi. During the Roundtable, it is understood that Saudi Food and Drug Authorities will provide incentives on the list of products which are unregistered and unavailable in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Incentives include fees reduction for registration and inspection, flexibility in pricing and giving the products price advantage and stabilization, Registration Priority, support and exemption from some technical requirements,” informed Udaya Bhaskar, director general (DG), Pharmexcil.
“In an attempt to build an end-to-end partnership with Indian respected pharmaceutical companies, the SFDA is seeking information on the number of products manufactured by the company, products registered with SFDA, US FDA and EMA and details of the local distributors in Saudi Arabia etc). Member companies are requested to provide the information to director.rodelhi@pharmexcil.com. Companies may take advantage of this unique opportunity for expansion of their business portfolio in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region,” Bhaskar said.
The GCC brings together six Arab countries – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
