The Telangana drug control administration is planning to set up an
intelligence cell to monitor the sale and supply of spurious drugs in
the state.
According to sources in the DCA, the decision to set
up the intelligence cell has come in the wake of recent drug
consultative committee meet held in New Delhi on 9th June, which had
suggested the state drug control authorities to set up their own
intelligence cells to monitor the growing menace of sales and supply of
spurious drugs across the country.
The intelligence cell is
expected to be headed by a nodel officer from the central drug control
standard organization (CDSCO). “Earlier, the DCA authorities used to
carry out the inspections of sale and supply of spurious drugs, but
again it is based on only complaints and occasionally during special
drives. However, so far we did not a have a dedicated special cell
exclusive with an intelligence cell to monitor the sales and supply of
spurious drugs,” informed a source from the TSDCA.
The main aim
of setting of the special intelligence cell is to carryout regular
market surveillance and conduct investigations with respect to spurious
and adultered drugs in coordination with the CDSCO.
However, the
state DCA officials also felt that with the setting up of the new
intelligence cell, the drugs and cosmetic rules 1945 are expected to be
changed and new guidelines and rules segregating various aspects of drug
inspection would come into being. “The objective is to strengthen the
regulatory system in the country. As part of this we are expecting there
will also be changes in the rules and regulations to guide the
inspectors to carryout inspections of clinical trials, sales of drugs,
cosmetics and other medicines both at pharmacy stores and in online
mode,” informed the official.
