The annual general body meeting (AGM) of the Telangana state board of the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association (TS IDMA) held on August 21 at Hotel Hyat in Hyderabad passed a resolution demanding to the Union health ministry that a short-term relief should be given to the pharma MSME sector in the state to convert their production facilities to the revised Schedule M of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

As per the DCGI’s earlier circular, the risk-based inspections based on the new GMP started last month in big companies with a turnover over Rs 250 crore. In small companies with less turnover, the inspections are scheduled to start in January next year.

As far as the pharma companies in Hyderabad are concerned, except a few major players like Dr. Reddys Lab, Aurobindo Pharma, Natco Pharma, etc, all others are small and medium level companies with less than Rs. 250 crore turnover. Through the resolution, the association wanted the government and the Drug Controller General of India to postpone the deadline announced for implementation of the Revised Schedule M by December 2024 for a respite to the small-scale manufacturers.

The president of the Telangana IDMA, J Rajamouli handed over the resolution to the southern zone vice-chairman of the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association, T Ravichandran, who was present on the dais with other dignitaries, to send it to the government through the national association.

In the meeting T Ravichandran explained the necessity and importance of the revised Schedule M and wanted the entrepreneurs to expedite the process of implementation of the schedule. However, he said he will send the resolution copy to the Union health minister’s office and to the DCGI. He further briefed them about the activities of the national industry body scheduled to be conducted in the months to come. The members who attended the meeting raised complaints about the technical problems they face in uploading various forms on the website of the CDSCO. The IDMA vice-chairman said he will bring the issues to the attention of the DCGI.

The director general of the state drug control administration, V Kamalasan Reddy was the chief guest. The association felicitated him for his dynamic performance as the DG of the department and for the support given to the pharma industry. While honouring the DG, the chairman of the state IDMA, Rajamouli said Kamalasan Reddy is the full time director general of the department after the bifurcation of the state from Andhra Pradesh. He praised the activities being carried out by the director as the head of the department. While addressing the gathering, Kamalasan Reddy said his aim is to make the state of Telangana free from spurious drugs and narcotic rackets.

Further, the association felicitated the newly promoted joint director D Ramdhan who is the state licensing authority. He said he will extend all support to the MSMEs as long as they comply with quality norms. The JDC wanted the industry players to make affordable drugs in order to serve the people of the state.

The director general of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil) Dr. Raja Bhanu, who was the guest of honour at the function, was also felicitated. In his speech, Bhanu highlighted the export opportunities of the Indian pharma sector. Other dignitaries like Venkat Jasti, managing director of Suven Lifesciences and Bharat Reddy, executive director of MSN Labs were honoured. In their speeches, they motivated the entrepreneurs by telling their success stories and how they reached the present position, stage by stage and crossing all hurdles. The event concluded with a vote-of-thanks by Rambabu, vice-chairman of the state IDMA.
