The number of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy (ASU&H) Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) colleges in the country has seen a 76.5 per cent and 81.9 percent increase in a decade from 2013-14. The number of seats in UG and PG has also doubled during the period, according to official data.

The number of ASU&H UG colleges in the country has grown from 502 in the year 2013-14 to 886 in 2023-24, with the majority of institutions operating in the Ayurveda system of medicine. Out of the 886 colleges, 541 are offering Ayurveda education, while 277 offering Homoeopathy, 53 offering Unani and 15 offering Siddha systems of medicines.

According to the data, Ayurveda colleges offering UG courses doubled during the decade, from 261 colleges in 2013-14, while Homoeopathy colleges grew by 45.8 per cent from 190 ten years back. The number of Unani colleges offering UG courses grew 26 per cent from 42, whereas Siddha colleges grew 66 per cent from nine in 2013-14.

PG colleges in these systems of medicine have reported a growth from 138 colleges in 2013-14 to 251 in 2023-24, again, with the majority of colleges offering training in Ayurveda system of medicines. Out of the total of 251 colleges offering PG courses, 151 are offering Ayurveda education, followed by 76 in Homoeopathy, 21 in Unani and three in Siddha.

The number of Ayurveda colleges offering PG courses grew 57 per cent from 96 colleges in 2013-14, while Homoeopathy colleges more than doubled from 30 ten years back. The number of Unani colleges offering PG courses also grew more than double from 9 colleges in 2013-14, whereas Siddha colleges did not report growth, staying at three colleges during the comparable period.

UG seats in the ASU&H systems of medicines have grown 94.3 per cent to 59,643 seats in 2023-24 compared to 30,694 seats in 2013-14. Almost 61 per cent of the total UG seats in 2023-24 caters to Ayurveda UG education.  Out of the total UG seats in 2023-24, around 36,863 seats are in Ayurveda, while Homoeopathy has 18,952 seats, Unani has 2,738 seats, and Siddha has 1090 seats.

The number of UG seats in Ayurveda has grown almost one and a half times, from 13,585 seats in 2013-14, whereas seats offering Homoeopathy course has grown 31 per cent from 14,464 seats, Unani reported a growth of 28.2 per cent, and Siddha doubled from 509 seats.

PG seats in ASU&H systems of medicines have more than doubled during the decade, to 7,450 seats in 2023-24 from 3,167 seats in 2013-14, according to the data. Almost 65.6 per cent of the total number of PG seats in 2023-24 are into Ayurveda systems of medicines. The number of Ayurveda seats stands at 4,885 in 2023-24, while Homeopathy has 1971 seats, Unani 417 seats and Siddha 177 seats.

The number of PG seats in Ayurveda has doubled during the decade, from 2,241 seats in 2013-14, while seats offering Homoeopathy course has reported a two times growth from 642 seats, Unani seats grew almost one and a half times from 144 seats, and Siddha reported the least growth of 26 percent from 140 seats, according to the data.

The Ministry said that it has facilitated the restructuring of the Ayush education sector and it has undergone a transformation aligning with the National Education Policy of 2020. It has enacted the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) Act, 2020 and National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH) Act, 2020 replacing the old Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970 and Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973, respectively.

It has also set up the first ever All India institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in Delhi along the lines of All India institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 2017. Apart from NIA and AIIA there are 9 more National Institutes working as autonomous organizations under the Ministry of Ayush, it added.
