The number of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy and Sowa Rigpa (Ayush) hospitals in the country has grown almost 21 per cent in the last 10 years, from 3,193 hospitals in 2011 to 3,859 hospitals 2020, with majority of the hospitals catering to Ayurveda treatment. The number of beds also saw an increase to 60,653 as on April 1, 2020, with 44,892 beds reported in Ayurveda hospitals, according to the Ministry of Ayush.

The number of Ayurveda hospitals grew from 2,420 in 2011, to 2,983 by April 1, 2020, while the number of Unani hospitals grew from 258 to 265, Siddha hospitals from 269 to 296 and Homoeopathy from 215 to 262 during the period. Hospitals in the rest of the categories grew from 31 to 53, during the comparable period, according to a report from the Ministry of Ayush. It said that there has been a significant rise in the health care facilities under Ayush over the years.

“There is a preponderance of Ayurveda hospitals, as nearly 77% hospitals and 74% beds pertain to this system exclusively,” said the Ministry. Unani, Siddha, Naturopathy and Homoeopathy account for the remaining nearly 23% hospitals. Interestingly, while the number of hospitals and dispensaries has reported a growth of over 20 per cent, as reported earlier, the number of registered Ayush practitioners has seen a decline from 5,896 per one crore population in 2011 to 5,290 per one crore population in 2020.

The existing Ayush hospitals in India have been further categorized by their ownership status, where 1% hospitals are under the control of 'CGHS & Central Government Organizations' and 99% hospitals are being managed by the State Governments & Union Territories directly.

Barring 42 hospitals existing under the control of 'CGHS & Central Government organizations', there are 3817 hospitals with 58395 beds in India as on April 1, 2020, which are under the jurisdiction of State Governments and Union Territories. Out of these, the maximum number of hospitals are in the state of Uttar Pradesh (51.9%), followed by Uttarakhand (11.4%), Karnataka (7.8%) and Tamil Nadu (7.7%).

The number of Ayush dispensaries also grew around 23.4 percent from 24,280 in 2011 to 29,951 registered as on April 1, 2020. Out of the total dispensaries, 18,740 are Ayurveda dispensaries, followed by 8230 dispensaries in Homoeopathy dispensaries, 1,748 Unani dispensaries, 859 Siddha dispensaries, 230 Yoga, 110 Naturopathy and 34 Sowa Rigpa dispensaries.

“On an average, Ayush dispensaries have increased at the rate of 2.4% per annum during 2011-2020. Ayurveda, Unani Siddha, Yoga, Naturopathy and Homoeopathy dispensaries registered a growth of 2.5%, 6.2%, 0.5%, 5.7%, 1.4% and 1.7% per annum during the period 2011-2020,” said the ministry.

Out of 29,951 Ayush dispensaries, 62.6% dispensaries pertain to Ayurveda system only, whereas, 5.8%, 2.9%, 0.8%, 0.4%, and 27.5% dispensaries belong to Unani, Siddha, Yoga, Naturopathy and Homoeopathy respectively.

Ayurveda dispensaries exist in 35 States and Union Territories with a maximum of 19.4% dispensaries in Rajasthan. Homoeopathy dispensaries also exist in 35 States and Union Territories with a maximum of 19.9% dispensaries in Uttar Pradesh. Maximum of 19.4% of total Unani dispensaries exist in Bihar. In the case of Siddha, dispensaries exist in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with 96.0% dispensaries existing in Tamil Nadu only. Yoga dispensaries are in Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Puducherry only.

Maximum of 92.6% Yoga dispensaries are in Tamil Nadu. Naturopathy dispensaries exist in 5 States/UTs with a maximum of 29.4% dispensaries existing in Telangana. Sowa-Rigpa dispensaries are in Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and West Bengal with a maximum of 70.5% dispensaries in Ladakh, added the report.
