The Union ministry of commerce and industry has called on the Ayush industry covering manufacturers and entrepreneurs to spell out their specific requirements to boost exports. This follows after the ministry holding a meeting for the industry on the theme ‘Local Goes Global: Make in India for the World."

The meeting was chaired by Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal, along with Anupriya Patel with minister of state and secretary, department for promotion of industry and internal trade, Som Parkash.

The purpose of the meeting according to the ministry of commerce was to have a dialogue with various industry sectors to develop the road map and action plan to achieve the target of 400 billion exports within one year.

Further the commerce ministry also proposes to take various steps such as regulatory reforms within the country for the purpose of ease of business, incentives for the exporters, infrastructure development, bilateral and multilateral negotiations with various countries and forums under FTA, level playing etc.

Therefore, the minister had asked for various industry associations for the inputs specific to their sectors to facilitate the export and thereby to increase the employment opportunities at domestic level.

Hence, Ayush associations and manufacturers need to send their detailed suggestions in writing to Rachna Shah, additional secretary DPIIT under intimation to this ministry.

Dr DBA Narayana, CSO, Ayurvidye Trust, said there are three fundamental problems that the government in collaboration with the industry need to deal with to promote exports of Ayush products. First is that the Union government should identify on a priority basis 20 to 25 countries to get a category created in that country to export Ayush medicines with general support health claims. Currently, most countries do not regulate and do not have a category called Ayurveda, Homoeopathy or Siddha medicine. Also very few Ayush products are registered as herbal medicine or preparations with the regulatory authorities abroad. It is licensed in India as Ayush medicine but Rule no. 161 of the Drugs & Cosmetics Rules permits industries to label these as per regulation of the country to which it is exported.

Secondly, the quantum on quality and value of exports are not getting registered under international trade figures as it is marketed as s food supplements, external use preparations, or cosmetics. There is the HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code for which some work is on but the government needs to expedite to enable Ayush product exports. Even if this takes six months to one year the total figure of how many tons of units have exported and its value in dollar or Euro terms can be ascertained, he added.

Thirdly, within India, there is need to promote sourcing of bio resources of all the plant materials if done from cultivated supply and not from the wild or forest. Then this resource should be exempted from payment of benefit sharing under biodiversity regulations. It will promote sustainability and industry will get to invest and work with farmers to cultivate these herbs required in large quantity. Moreover, when cultivated it will improve the quality and authenticity of the herbs and increase farmers income. But this is not happening and is a long standing demand to provide more avenues while exempting bio resources of large cultivated source from application of benefit sharing requirements, said Dr Narayana.
