The MSME pharmaceutical units in Telangana, which come around 400 in number, want to promote an industry cluster of around 200 acres of land for a separate formulation industry concentration within the vast geographical area of the Pharma City, the upcoming pharma park, located at Mucherla near Hyderabad.
The industry leaders feel that an exclusive area in cluster form in the 19,000 acres of the pharma city, the world’s largest pharma park, will support the micro, small and medium pharma enterprises in Telangana to develop and diversify their industrial operations.
The demand of the MSME sector has been put before the government by the state board of the Indian Drugs Manufacturers Association (IDMA Telangana). In the wake of decreasing Covid cases in Hyderabad, the IDMA will once again approach the government with the same demand.
Informing Pharmabiz about the plan of the IDMA and talking about the present situation of the MSME pharmaceutical units in the state, SK Janimiya, chairman of the IDMA-Telangana, said the association will meet the industry minister for the second time very soon and reiterate the demand. He said the pharma MSMEs in Telangana are working with substantial government support, accordingly they are not affected much by the Covid-19 pandemic. The units went well in the first wave of the pandemic and continue to be so in the second wave too. However, the API manufacturers received some setbacks in transporting materials from other states and by way of rise in prices.
“We are demanding a separate zone in the upcoming pharma city. The MSME pharma sector in Telangana is strong and it plays a vital role in the healthcare sector of the state. Due to incentives and tax exemptions announced by Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments ten years ago, about 60 per cent of the manufacturers from Hyderabad shifted their facilities to the tax free zones. Even now they are operating their businesses from there and do not want to come back, but continue to operate there only. This migration had reduced the number of formulation companies in Telangana. Although some big players and MNCs like Dr Reddys Lab, Aurobindo Pharma, Divis Laboratories, APC Pharmaceuticals, BioGenex Life Sciences, Parexel International etc are there in Hyderabad, the companies under MSME sector are growing strongly and have now become medium level players. We would like to say that there is no small or micro level formulation unit in Telengana”, said Janimia.
Janimia said the companies who have traded the covid related products during the pandemic period could grow well and raise their turnover much more than they were getting in previous years. He is of the opinion that the pharmaceutical manufacturers are not the winners in Covid period, but they are not the losers compared to other industries. According to him, the drug manufacturers of acute therapies in Telangana were severely affected by the Covid pandemic.
Regarding enforcement by the regulatory department, the state IDMA chairman said the drugs control department is supportive to the industry; still there are some problems which have to be sorted out. The industry expects more help from the regulatory department.
He said a new state board of the IDMA will be formed shortly for the pharma industrial units in Andhra Pradesh where the majority of API units are working. Since there are some conflicts of interest between the two states, the companies cannot work under one association.
