The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has appreciated the Union Ayush Ministry’s action against false claims by manufacturers of unapproved medicines claiming efficacy for COVID-19 under the name of Ayush.

IMA stated that the administrative regulation on safety of medicines of all systems including Ayush has to be implemented meticulously as COVID-19 is of great concern to every human being.

"Drugs, vaccines and laboratory tests in this regard have to be diligently evaluated. Fly by night operators should not be allowed to take the patients to a ransom. In this regard, it is also pointed out that formal pharmacopoeia and evidence based research with double blind control should be insisted," stated Dr Rajan Sharma, national president, IMA.

Sharma added, "Once again appreciating the Ayush Ministry and Government of India for taking the right step in containing unverified claims regarding efficacy of certain medicines under the pretext of belonging to Ayush."

Earlier, Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogapeeth based in Haridwar had launched ayurvedic medicine 'Coronil and Swasari', to treat the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which the company said has been shown 100 per cent favourable results during clinical trials on affected patients.  The company announce that that the first ayurvedic, clinically controlled trial based evidence and research-based medicine has been prepared by the combined efforts of Patanjali Research Centre and NIMS, Jaipur.

But one day later, Union Ayush Ministry asked the Patanjali Yogapeeth to stop advertising the drugs which the company claims can cure the coronavirus. Ministry of Ayush on the claims made by Haridwar (Uttrakhand)-based Patanjali Ayurved in treating COVID-19, the Ministry noted that it had taken cognisance of the news being recently flashed on its drug by the company. Facts of the claim related to the drug and details of the stated scientific study are not known to the Ministry, as per the statement issued by the Ayush Ministry.

IMA is a national voluntary organisation of doctors of modern scientific system of medicine in India, which looks after the interest of doctors as well as the well being of the community at large.
