The Ghaziabad-based Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Pharmacy Council (TNPC) to promote safe and rational use of medicines through joint initiatives in pharmacovigilance, patient safety, and professional awareness among pharmacists.

Under this MoU, IPC and TNPC will work together to strengthen the role of registered pharmacists in adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting and to promote the use of the National Formulary of India (NFI) in healthcare institutions across Tamil Nadu. The NFI is a key reference for prescribing, dispensing, and administering medicines for healthcare professionals published by IPC.

Apart from publishing NFI, IPC also publishes the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP), which serves as a legal and regulatory document that specifies the official standards of drugs in India. Compliance with the standards prescribed in IP is mandatory for drug manufacturers, regulators, and public testing laboratories.

This comes close on the heels of the IPC having signed the first MoU with the Uttar Pradesh Pharmacy Council (UPPC) towards promoting rational use of medicines.

The IPC, which is also the National Coordination Centre (NCC) of the PvPI, has been working in collaboration with national and international stakeholders, ensuring patient safety by monitoring ADRs.

While IP defines the quality, purity, and strength of pharmaceutical substances, the NFI serves as a complementary resource, offering practical guidance to healthcare providers working in hospitals, dispensaries and in drug retail and wholesale establishments.

The MoU was signed by Dr V Kalaiselvan, secretary-cum-scientific director, IPC, and J Jayaseelan, president, TNPC, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.

Additionally, the collaboration envisages conducting awareness programmes on materiovigilance, pharmacovigilance, ADR reporting, and the safe use of medicines for hospital and community pharmacists. It also seeks to support the establishment and mandatory use of the NFI in hospital pharmacies throughout the state and to jointly organise the National Pharmacovigilance Week in Tamil Nadu each year.

“Through this partnership, both organisations aim to enhance the knowledge and capacity of pharmacists, encourage proactive ADR reporting, and strengthen medicine safety surveillance in the region. IPC will provide technical expertise and guidance, while TNPC will facilitate coordination and participation among pharmacists working in healthcare facilities. This collaboration underscores IPC’s continued commitment to advancing pharmacovigilance and rational medicine use across the country, in alignment with the vision of ensuring quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines for the public,” informs IPC Spokesperson.
