More than half of the 4,464 Ayush healthcare services facilities approved for upgradation as Ayush Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) under the Ayushman Bharat project are progressively functional while the works are going on to complete the rest of the upgradation. The Ministry of Ayush has said that it has released the Central share of Rs. 321.75 crore to the States and Union Territories for the upgradation so far.

The Union Cabinet on March 20, 2020, had approved the proposal to operationalise 12,500 HWCs through National Ayush Mission under Ayushman Bharat in a phased manner from year 2019-20 to 2023-24.

Till date, a total of 4,464 facilities are approved for up-gradation as Ayush HWCs in 33 States/UTs during 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 and Central share of Rs. 321.75 crore has been released, said Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ayush in the Lok Sabha.

Out of approved 4,464 centres, 2,322 units are progressively functional. Rajasthan has seen the highest number of 1,000 approvals for upgradation to HWCs, followed by 871 in Uttar Pradesh, 569 in Haryana, 562 in Madhya Pradesh, and 421 in Telangana.

Delhi and Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli has not yet received any approval for such upgradation of Ayush facilities.

Uttarakhand has 300 facilities approved under the scheme, while Maharashtra has 294 facilities, West Bengal has 271 facilities, Tamil Nadu and Odisha has 250 facilities each, and Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Kerala has 240 facilities approved by the Centre.

Apart from the Ayush HWCs, the Ministry under Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) has 96 Ayush units or wellness centres functional in the country.

Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the National Ayush Mission (NAM), there are provisions of financial assistance for establishment of new 10 to 50 bedded integrated Ayush Hospitals and establishment of Ayush HWCs by upgrading Ayush dispensaries and existing sub health centres. So far 104 up to 50 bedded integrated Ayush Hospitals have been approved under the NAM.

This include 24 facilities in Uttar Pradesh, eight in Chhattisgarh, seven in Madhya Pradesh, six in Rajasthan, four each in Maharashtra, Manipur, and Nagaland, three each in Uttarakhand, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha, two each in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Puducherry, Punjab, Tripura and West Bengal and one each in Andaman & Nicobar islands, Bihar, Chandigarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, and Sikkim.

The Ministry has also established hospitals attached to National Institutes of Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy in different states including 200 bedded hospitals in All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi and National Institute of Siddha, Chennai, 300 bedded facility in Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar, Gujarat, 280 beds in National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, Rajasthan, 100 beds in National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkatta, West Bengal, 180 beds in National Institute of Uanani Medicine, Bengaluru, Karnataka, among others.

Satellite centres with 250 beds have been established in All India Institute of Ayurveda, Goa, and National Institute of Ayurveda, Panchkula, Haryana, 200 beds in National Institute of Unani Medicine, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh and 100 beds in National Institute of Homoeopathy, Narela, Delhi.
