NPPA fixes separate ceiling prices for Gufic Bioscience's two Tazofic injection formulations

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has notified separate ceiling prices for antibiotic scheduled formulations Tazofic injection 2.25 gm and 4.5 gm packs from Mumbai-based Gufic Biosciences Ltd on account of special packaging in dual chamber bag.
Any other manufacturer claiming separate ceiling price having special feature of dual chamber bag helping in reduction of administration time, reconstitution of the drug with distilled water in accurate dose with reduction in possibility of contamination, shall apply to NPPA for separate ceiling price approval, said the Authority.
NPPA said that piperacillin 2 gm + tazobactum 250 mg and piperacillin 4 gm + tazobactum 500 mg are scheduled formulations under Schedule I of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), 2013 and its ceiling price is fixed.
Gufic Biosciences has approached the Authority seeking separate ceiling price for Tazofic injection 2.25 gm containing piperacillin 2 gm + tazobactum 250 mg and Tazofic injection 4.5 gm containing piperacillin 4 gm + tazobactum 500 mg having special features of dual chamber bags.
The company said that it is designed to allow the separation of different solutions that require admixing just before administration helping to reduce the administration time, assurance of right dosages, avoidance of hospital contamination, and provides high stability and convenience etc.
The Multidisciplinary Committee (MDC) of Experts of NPPA in its meetings in September, 2022 and July, 2023 observed that the formulations have special feature of dual chamber bag helping in reduction of administration time, reconstitution of the drug with distilled water in accurate dose with reduction in the possibility of contamination.
The Committee recommended that an increase of 15 per cent over and above the ceiling price be allowed to Gufic Biosciences for these two formulations on account of special packaging in dual chamber bags.
NPPA in its 116th Authority meeting dated September 6, 2023 decided to accept the recommendation of the MDC and notified the special prices accordingly.
For Tazofic injection 2.25 gm, the price per dual chamber bag has been fixed as Rs. 220.26 and for Tazofic 4.5 gm at Rs. 459.28 per dual bag chamber.
The particular ceiling price is only applicable to the manufacturer mentioned in the order and the manufacturer shall issue a price list in Form V in compliance from the date of the notification, added the Authority.
According to the NPPA notification on March 31, 2023, the revised prices as per annual Wholesale Price Index (WPI) at 12.1218 per cent increase for piperacillin 2 gm + tazobactum 250 mg is Rs. 191.53 per vial and for piperacillin 4 gm + tazobactum 500 mg is Rs. 399.38 per vial.
