Some of the Hyderabad-based pharma companies are looking out for opportunities to manufacture Covid-19 vaccine on contractual basis.
Two Indian companies, Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech, are presently manufacturing and supplying Astrazeneca-Oxford University developed Covishied and Covaxin respectively in India. However, some of the Hyderabad-based pharma companies like Gland Pharma, Biological E Limited, Indian Immunological Limited, Aurobindo Pharma and others are now looking out for opportunities to manufacture and supply Covid-19 vaccines developed in USA, Europe and other parts of the world.
Recently, Hyderabad-based Gland Pharma had also expressed its intent to manufacture foreign Covid-19 vaccines in India and supply the same in the Indian markets. “As we all know, the vaccination process is slowly picking up. However, with lot of stress on supply and very high demand, it is important and a welcome move by some of the pharma companies who have offered to do fill and finish process of the vaccines and ensure as many doses are available in the market as possible to meet the demand,” observed an industry analyst from Bulk Drugs Manufacturers Association (BDMA).
It is learnt that Gland Pharma, which is involved in both manufacturing of bulk drugs and formulations, is also having a huge capacity of filling up of vials and syringes and pack them and supply to the market. This process of filling up of syringes (prefilled syringes), vials and packing them is also called as ‘Fill and Finish Process’ in the pharma industry.
“Gland Pharma is one among the top most companies which is having the high ‘fill and finish’ capacity in India. We can go to an extent of producing 4 crore doses of vials and can definitely meet the market demand. We are looking out for opportunities to manufacture the Covid-19 vaccine of some of the foreign companies and supply the same in India and to other surrounding countries,” observed a spokesperson from Gland Pharma.
It is already known that some of the leading foreign companies like Moderna, Pfizer and others have already approached the DCGI for permission to allow manufacturing of their vaccines in India. It is most likely that the Indian pharma companies like Gland Pharma and others are venturing out to grab the opportunities and accordingly setting up their manufacturing lines ready for the production of Covid-19 vaccine in the coming days.
