Renolit Group, the Germany-headquartered multinational, is making significant strides in the global healthcare industry through its dedicated vertical, Renolit Healthcare, by introducing advanced polymer-based packaging solutions for critical medical applications. The company serves key therapeutic areas such as IV therapy, nutrition, dialysis, blood treatment, and biotechnology.

Operating with a robust global manufacturing footprint, Renolit Healthcare has established major production facilities across Europe, North America, South America, and China. The Netherlands hosts its healthcare factory in Europe, while its U.S. plant caters to North America. In South America, the Chile-based facility has become a key hub for new product rollouts. In China, two plants are operational—Beijing focuses on polypropylene (PP) and non-PVC materials, while the Guangzhou unit specialises in PVC materials for IV and drink bags. Although the company also operates a factory in India, it currently serves a different vertical and is not involved in healthcare manufacturing.

One of the most significant technological highlights from the company this year is the introduction of EMT (Extrusion Modular Technology), a nanolayer film innovation poised to transform IV packaging standards globally. Traditionally, IV films are manufactured using three- or five-layer co-extrusion processes. However, with EMT, the company has developed the capability to engineer 157 nanolayers within the middle layer of a standard three-layer film.

According to Sally, spokesperson for Renolit Healthcare, this advanced multilayer approach substantially improves the film’s mechanical strength and flexibility. “EMT allows us to reduce raw material usage by up to 20% while significantly lowering water vapour transmission. The result is a more durable, high-performance film that also offers better cost efficiency,” she stated.

The new technology offers a 10–15 percent cost advantage, which is especially appealing to highly price-sensitive markets like China, India, and South East Asia. The company’s Chilean facility was the first to commercially produce and distribute EMT-based films, which have already gained traction in markets such as South America, the Middle East, and the United States. Following this success, the company has commenced EMT film production in China, further demonstrating the scalability and global adaptability of the technology.

As part of its broader sustainability mission, the company is implementing several internal and external initiatives. The company has introduced in-production recycling to repurpose scrap and defective films into personal protective equipment (PPE) films used in food packaging. Additionally, it is running a packaging reuse programme that encourages customers to return used pallets, cartons, and inner cores, which are then cleaned and reused in future production cycles.

Commenting on downstream sustainability challenges, Sally clarified that while the company supplies semi-finished products such as caps and ports for IV bags, the final products are manufactured by pharmaceutical clients. She emphasised that recycling of end-of-life medical products remains a regulatory issue in countries like China and would require active government involvement. “We are an upstream supplier. The final IV solutions are produced by our clients. For medical product recycling to progress, policy must be driven by top-level governance,” she noted.

The group’s continued investment in innovation and sustainability is redefining the benchmarks for healthcare packaging. Through its EMT nanolayer technology, the company is not only pushing the boundaries of performance and efficiency but also contributing to the environmental goals of the healthcare industry, making treatment delivery safer, smarter, and more cost-effective across global markets.
