In a major move to ease pharma export transit hassles, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) recently commissioned Cargo Terminal 2 at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad.
The advanced facility includes a dedicated pharma and cold-chain zone, featuring a large, fully temperature-controlled area equipped with advanced temperature cut-off systems and continuous monitoring to ensure the safe handling of pharmaceuticals and perishable goods.
Telangana has emerged as a leading Top 7 global Lifesciences cluster, with Hyderabad housing a large number of pharma companies, with over Rs. 50,000 crore in investments since 2024, aiming to add Rs one lakh crore of new investments. Hyderabad is known for its Medak cluster accounts for 40 per cent of the total bulk drug production in India and 50 per cent of the bulk drug exports.
From Aurobindo Pharma, to Divi’s Laboratories, Laurus and Lonza, to name a few, the developments indicate a future pharma pathway. Besides pharma parks coming up in Mucherla near Hyderabad, proposed Hyderabad Pharma City in Kandukur, Yacharam and Kadthal Mandals of Ranga Reddy district in Telangana signifies the city’s importance in the pharmaceutical domain. Further it houses a number of Global Capability Centres for multinational companies.
According to industry stakeholders, this development significantly strengthens the region’s logistics capabilities for the pharmaceutical sector. India is already recognised for exporting pharmaceutical products to more than 200 countries worldwide, with Hyderabad serving as a major air cargo hub for these shipments.
Harish K Jain, president, Federation of Pharmaceutical Entrepreneurs (FOPE) and director, Embiotic Labs, said that in terms of global pharma ecosystem, Hyderabad is a leading centre with largest number of US FDA approved production plants, number of GCCs as well as biotech companies. With the commissioning of new cargo terminal, exports from Hyderabad and surrounding regions will get a big boost and will help realize the country's true potential.
Spanning 16,864 square meters, featuring dedicated inbound and outbound zones, multi-level racking systems, and improved airside-landside connectivity to minimize cargo dwell times, it has been engineered for operational efficiency and long-term scalability. The terminal will commence operations with a handling capacity of around 50,000 metric tonnes per annum, with dedicated expansion areas enabling capacity to double to 100,000 metric tonnes per annum. It is constructed with energy-efficient lighting, optimized HVAC design, and resource-efficient building materials and sets a new benchmark for Hyderabad’s position as a global logistics hub. The city is already titled as the bulk drug capital of India.
The commissioning of Cargo Terminal 2 at Hyderabad International Airport marks a transformational milestone in the airport’s strategic growth as a world-class air cargo and logistics destination. The terminal is designed to meet surging domestic and international cargo demand, delivering a next-generation infrastructure platform for airlines, freight forwarders, logistics operators, and regulatory agencies, said the GHIAL communication note.
