World Siddha Day is celebrated on January 9, the birthday of Siddhar Agasthyar, the father of Siddha medicine.
The Siddha community in Kerala is all pepped up to celebrate the day while their counterparts in Tamil Nadu, where the system is said to have originated, are seemingly silent.
At the Women’s Club auditorium at Kaudiyar in Thiruvananthapuram the organizers are working round the clock to conduct a one-week programme beginning on January 9. The one-week programme is organized by the National Ayush Mission in association with the Kerala ISM department, supported by Santhigiri Siddha Medical College and Siddha Practitioners of Kerala, said Dr P R Sajikumar, programme manager of the NAM.
Briefing Pharmabiz about the programme, Dr. Saji said the programme includes exhibition, live therapies of Siddha, panel discussion on different specialities and speciality consultation including ‘Naadi Chikitsa’. He said this is the first time a mega event is organized as part of the celebration in Kerala. Students of Santhigiri Medical College, practitioners of Siddha and other Ayush streams from across the state will visit the exhibition and participate in all the programmes. Dr. Arunbabay Palakkal, president of Kerala Siddha Practitioners Association (KSPA) said this is the sixth siddha day celebration being organized in Kerala and this year his association is happy that the NAM and state ISM department have come forward to undertake the responsibility to conduct the program covering one week. The major highlights of the programme are the Siddha Expo and the Food Fest in which the tribal people from Wynadu district will showcase their medicines and food items prepared under the supervision of Siddha doctors in north Kerala. In Kozhikodu, Idukki and Wynadu districts, KSPA conducted pre-event programs in the last week of December with the support of the national Ayush mission. Sources from the NAM said five panel discussions were planned to be conducted during this period and teachers of Santhigiri Medical College and practitioners of Siddha from government and private hospitals will take part in the programmes. The first panel discussion on the subject, ‘Siddha diet and nutrition for healthy life’ will be organized by Agasthya Kalari, Nemam on January 9 at 5 pm. On the second day the experts will discuss on the subject, ‘Naadi—A Diagnostic Tool’ and on the third day the subject for the discussion is “Varma Chikitsa and its Therapeutic Advantages’. While ‘Scope of Siddha Science in Skin Ailments’ is the subject for the fourth day the experts will discuss ‘Beauty and Traditional Concepts – A Siddha Perspective’ on the last day, January 13. Dr. Arunbaby said he will invite Dr. Kannan, president of the IMPCOPS in Chennai to attend a panel discussion.
