An expert panel of practicing physicians and researchers in Siddha system in Tamil Nadu has called upon the Siddha fraternity to encourage all the Siddha professionals and followers to take Covid-19 vaccine as it will not make the infection complicated.
Although there are some medications in the Siddha system to treat mild and moderate symptoms of the viral fever such as Covid-19, vaccination will not make any serious problems for the infected. Besides, as a national policy all stakeholders of the traditional systems must get vaccinated and it is the responsibility of the practitioners to motivate all those who approach them for treatment also to get vaccinated.
This was discussed by a panel of Siddha physicians and experts in a webinar organized by a group of traditional practitioners from all the districts in Tamil Nadu.
The experts highlighted the need to expedite the vaccination drive because there are reports by scientists that there may be chance for a third wave of the pandemic. So, as frontline Covid warriors, it is the duty of all Siddha doctors to encourage everyone to take vaccination as early as possible. The online discussion was mainly focused on ‘management of Civid -19 through Siddha’ and it was attended by doctors treating Covid patients and researchers in the system.
Dr Jayavenkatesh, managing director of the NABH accredited Siddha hospital, Kokila Siddha Hospital and Research Centre in Madurai, Dr T Thirunarayanan, secretary of the Centre for Traditional Medicines and Research (CTMR) in Chennai and a practicing physician, Dr R Priyadarshani were the main speakers in the webinar. All of them have opined that Siddha medicines can treat corona virus disease if the patient starts taking medications form the beginning of the infection.
According to Dr Jayavenkatesh, who treats patients with mild and moderate symptoms in his hospitals, Siddha medicines are best remedies for preventing viral infections. He narrated in detail how many patients are being treated in his NABH accredited hospital where oxygen facilities are also set up, how he treats if the patient’s condition becomes worse or complicated and what medications are given for the post-Covid conditions. He said if the patients are brought to the hospital when the symptoms are first seen, the disease can be treated without any problems. He said all the doctors and other staffs in his hospitals are advised to take the vaccination at the earliest.
Dr Thirunarayanan, secretary of the CTMR, is of the opinion that all the patients in the second wave are having fever unlike in the first wave. But eighty percent of the disease can be treated through Siddha provided the patients have no other complications. But it cannot be said that Siddha system of treatment is a perfect tool for treating Covid-19. He said regular monitoring is a major factor while treating through Siddha system, and monitoring is also required in the post-Covid conditions.
