Imports of surgical equipment to the country have reported a decline of 11.58% even as the export of these products was almost stagnant during the month of August, 2025. For the first five months of the current fiscal, imports registered almost 9% growth compared to the same period a year ago.

The imports of surgicals during the month of August stood at $117.16 million, as compared to $132.5 million in the same month of last year. In Rupee terms, the imports declined 7.8% during the period, to Rs.  1,025.36 crore, as compared to Rs.  1,111.66 crore reported in August, last year, according to data from the ministry of commerce and industry.

Exports, on the other hand, during the month of August was $63.68 million, as compared to $63.63 million in the same month last year. In Rupee terms, the exports registered a 4.4% growth at Rs. 557.3 crore, as compared to Rs. 533.89 crore during the corresponding month of 2024.

During the period from April to August, 2025, imports grew 8.9% to $590.72 million, as compared to $542.24 million in the same period of previous fiscal year.

In Rupee terms, the imports grew 12.2% to Rs. 5,084.18 crore during the five months, as compared to Rs. 4,531.95 crore during the same period of previous fiscal year.

Exports of surgicals, during the same five months of 2025, grew 6.8% to $314.39 million, as against $294.33 million exports registered from India during the same period of 2024. In terms of Rupee, the exports grew almost 10% to Rs. 2,706.03 crore from April to August, 2025, as compared to Rs. 2,459.4 crore during the same period of 2024.

It may be noted that the surgicals imports during the first quarter of the current fiscal year was at $335.07 million with a 16% growth as compared to $288.82 million during the same period of last year. In Rupee terms, imports grew almost 19% to Rs. 2,866.23 crore during April to June, 2025, as against to Rs. 2,409.52 crore in the same quarter of previous fiscal year.

Exports grew almost 7% during the first quarter of the fiscal year at $182.81 million as compared to $170.92 million during the same three months of the previous year. The growth, in Rupee terms, was almost 9.7% during the quarter ended June 30, 2025, at Rs. 1,563.92 crore as compared to exports of Rs. 1,425.87 crore during the same period last year.

India's medical devices trade with overseas nations has been reporting higher imports for several years and the government has been working on various schemes and support policies to help improve manufacturing medical devices including surgicals in the country.

According to a report by the iMarc Group, the Indian general surgical devices market was at $572.01 million in 2024, which it expects to reach at $1.13 billion by 2023, owing to advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques, increased healthcare infrastructure investments, government initiatives like 'Make in India' promoting domestic device manufacturing, rising surgical procedures due to lifestyle diseases, and the adoption of robotic and power-assisted surgical tools.
