TN pharma industry gears up to donate tremendously to govt for its efforts to fight Covid-19 pandemic

The pharmaceutical manufacturers in Tamil Nadu are opening their purse strings to donate enormously to the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF) to support the new government in its efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
Two major players in the state have already shared Rs one crore each with the CMPRF and industry associations like TNIDMA, TNPMA and the TNPWT are mobilizing funds from individual companies to contribute one more crore, sources informed Pharmabiz.
This is in addition to the free medicine supplies, face masks, hand sanitizers and protective gears contributed to the government by the companies to help the government in all its initiatives to eliminate the deadly virus from Tamil Nadu.
Talking to Pharmabiz, C C Parthiban, chairman of Caplin Point Laboratories Ltd, a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in Tamil Nadu, said his company has directly paid Rs one crore to the CMPRF. He said the TN IDMA has a mega plan to support the government and the leaders of the association approached him for contribution. But the company has decided to donate independently at this time. Sharing information about his business, Parthiban said this year the company has crossed Rs one thousand crore in exports.
S S Vanangamudi, chairman and managing director of Apex Laboratories Ltd, a brand leader in zinc based products in Chennai, said he has also given Rs one crore to the chief minister’s relief fund to fight Covid-19. The company’s Ayush product ‘Clevira’ has been approved by the Union Ministry of Ayush as a supportive therapy product for mild symptoms of the Covid-19. He said Apex has contributed to the CMPRF to reinforce the company’s commitment to the public in safeguarding their health.
The pharma industry in Tamil Nadu has risen up to support the government as soon as the chief minister’s appeal for donation has come out. The state branch of the IDMA and the Tamil Nadu Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (TN PMA) an association of small and micro units, have started collecting donations from each companies to make a fund of Rs one crore to be given to the government on behalf of the associations.
Chairman of the TN IDMA, J Jayaseelan said, “We are trying our level best to support the government by collecting maximum amount from pharma industry in the state. Already our two members, Apex and Caplin Point, have handed over two crores separately, and in the organizational level we will do our part very shortly”.
M D Varadarajan, president of the TN PMA said after the lockdown he along with office-bearers of the TN PWT will visit each member-company and collect their contributions. However, the amount will be handed over to the CMPRF in the name of the state pharma sector.
Tamil Nadu is under the grip of the deadly virus and the number of active cases and fatalities are increasing every day despite all measures are taken to contain the spread. According to reports, currently about three lakhs active cases are in the state, of which over 40,000 are in oxygen support. In order to break the disease transmission chain, the government has imposed complete lockdown in the state from May 24 to May 31.
