ARO Volcani Center in Israel, to reduce post-harvest food losses in
developing countries and diminish world hunger.
TNAU is a leading
agrotechnology provider of India and its graduates are recognised
throughout the world. The university had its genesis from establishment
of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, as early as
1868, which was later relocated at Coimbatore during 1906.
The
university offers 13 undergraduate degree programmes, 33 post-graduate
degree programmes and 26 doctoral programmes all over Tamil Nadu. It has
32 research centres for agrotechnology development and 14 farm science
centres (KVKs) for outreach.
Dr S Mohan, dean (SPGS), TNAU,
Coimbatore, who has developed innovative technologies for the
post-harvest preservation of grains/seeds of agricultural and
horticultural crops was responsible for the collaboration.
WFPC
is a consortium of 12 major research universities and a research
institute (ARO Volcani Center, Israel) in six continents dedicated
towards providing an advanced world-class post-harvest education (M.Sc.
and Ph.D) to young students in developing countries and conducting
research on much-needed new post-harvest technologies.
Dr
Charles L Wilson, former USDA scientist in post-harvest pathology, &
founder/chairman & CEO, WFPC, states, “Because of our rapidly
exploding population, the world requires more food to feed the
population and we see this association between TNAU and the World Food
Preservation Center can address this crisis through a sustainable way
along with other collaborators to address this crisis.”
He
continues, “We are indeed fortunate to have TNAU joining the World Food
Preservation Center LLC in our effort to reduce the post-harvest losses
of food in developing countries and diminish world hunger. Their
experience and knowledge will be most valuable to us as we move
forward.”
