Ayush experts have access to herbal formulations for early stage kidney issues like stones and urinary tract infections. This apart, there is considerable information on successful outcomes with classical Ayurveda preparations advised to patients suffering from high uric acid or creatinine levels following high protein diets.
In a recent advertorial on the occasion of the World Kidney Day observed annually on March 14, modern medicine experts had provided their perspective on treatment offerings for the dreaded disease. We see the need for the Ayush sector to do a similar one with Ayush products that have proven scientifically good for kidney health and problems. We personally believe Ayush has more and effective offerings for kidney functions that modern drugs may not have, said Dr DBA Narayana, CSO, Ayurvidye Trust and researcher on herbs.
It is time that the Ministry of Ayush also publishes such data as an advertorial describing these remedies, so that if detected early many patients can avoid surgery or hospitalization, he added.
Noting that in early stage kidney issues like stone formation, UTI and above normal uric acid or creatinine levels, there are excellent herbs both individual or in combination or several classical ayurvedic products. These have been shown to have a positive impact in both in-vitro testing and human studies that if one consumes these herbs regularly then the kidney stones have been actually seen to start reducing in size. This is because these herbs have diuretic activity, apart from the activity on stones, they get flushed out over a period. Depending on the number and size of stones, a combination of three or four herbs which work on all the three are advised by qualified Ayurveda physicians. Soon after a fortnight, a month or two, patient is seen to feel visibly better and the ultra sound report thereafter convinces the doctor and patient that the treatment is successful, he said.
Some of these are Gokhru (Tribulis Terrestris), Punarnava (Boerhaavia Diffusa), Pashanabheda (Rotula aquatica), Shallabi (Boswellia serrata), Mountain Knot Gras (Aerva Lanata), Mulethi Glycyrrhiza) Kulathi (Marotyloma Unifrum) and Haridra (Curcumin longa). These are a few herbs for stones in kidney treatment. Other ingredients are juice of banana pith and Ajwain seeds water. There are many classical recipes in the grantha for example Kaishore Guggulu for treating high creatinine and uric acid, said Dr Narayana.
Several Ayurvedic Vaidyas have access to patients treated with Kaishore Guggulu batis for 30-60 days post which the creatinine and uric acid levels of patients have come to normal. Further, there is a combination of herbs in Ayurveda and also classical preparations which actually help in regeneration of kidney cells in early stages of disease detection but not in severe or advanced stages where surgery or transplant are the only options, he said.
It is high time nephrologists and general medicine experts take cognizance of Ayush medicines. They should team-up with the Ayush doctors, review all the published data and be open-minded to move forward with such treatment options, or study them in collaboration with Ayush physicians, said Dr Narayana adding that this would be only way to bring Ayush remedies to the forefront.
Dr Narayana also cautioned that patients never self-medicate with Ayush herbs, instead consult an Ayush Vaidya who would be the best to diagnose and prescribe.
