The state drug control department under the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) of Haryana has issued a state-wide alert following the discovery of an undeclared allopathic prescription drug in a popular ayurvedic supplement.
The office of the state drug controller officially declared ‘NA (X-Plus Gold)’ as ‘Not of Standard Quality’ (NSQ) after laboratory testing revealed the presence of an unlisted allopathic substance.
The contamination was identified by the Regional Drugs Testing Laboratory (RDTL) in Chandigarh during a detailed analysis of Batch No. VBX-044. While the product was marketed as a natural proprietary medicine, testing confirmed it was positive for Tadalafil, a potent drug typically used in allopathic medicine to treat erectile dysfunction. This synthetic addition was not disclosed on the product’s composition label, which claimed only herbal ingredients like Ashwagandha and Shatavari.
In response to these findings, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has ordered an immediate market recall. The manufacturer, Vaidban Ayurved Bhawan, located in Ambala, has been directed to withdraw the impugned batch (manufactured in June 2025) from all retail and wholesale channels. The FDA has warned that the inclusion of such substances in ayurvedic products without authorization is a serious violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
Lalit Kumar Goel, the State Drugs Controller-cum-Licensing Authority has instructed all senior drug inspectors across Haryana to maintain strict vigilance. Field officers have been authorized to seize existing stocks and take additional samples to ensure no other contaminated batches remain in circulation. This move is part of a broader crackdown to prevent the sale of adulterated herbal supplements that pose significant health risks to unsuspecting consumers.
The SDC told Pharmabiz that the alert has been widely circulated to the Haryana Chemists and Druggists Association and the president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Haryana to ensure healthcare providers are aware of the risk. Medical professionals often warn that undeclared Tadalafil can interact dangerously with other medications, particularly nitrates, leading to life-threatening drops in blood pressure.
The drug control department is urging consumers who have purchased X-Plus Gold from Batch VBX-044 to discontinue use immediately and return the product to the point of purchase. The licensing authority of the Ayush department has also been notified to take further regulatory action against the manufacturing unit to prevent future occurrences of such pharmaceutical adulteration.
