Exports of bulk drugs and intermediates grew almost 10 per cent in the month of July this year, while the exports growth was almost 6.6% for the first four months of the current fiscal year.

Exports during the month of July, 2025, stood at $414.3 million, as compared to $376.75 million in the same month of previous year. The exports in July, 2024 was around 8% decline from $410.84 million in the same month in 2023, according to data from the ministry of commerce and industry.

In Rupee terms, the exports were around 13.3% higher in July, 2025 at Rs. 3,567.9 crore as compared to Rs. 3,149.4 crore in the same month of previous year. The export in July, 2024 was a 6.70% decline compared to Rs. 3,375.13 crore in July, 2023.

Quantity of exports grew around 29% in July, 2025, at 50,604.8 MT of bulk drugs and intermediates, as compared to 39,096 MT in the same month last year.

During the four months ended July 31, 2025, the exports grew 6.62% to $1.61 billion, as compared to $1.51 billion in the same period of previous fiscal year. The exports during April to July, 2024 was 1.95% decline compared to $1.54 billion during the same period of April to July, 2023.

In Rupee terms, the exports were 9.7% higher at Rs. 13,819 crore during the four months till July 31, 2025, as compared to Rs. 12,597 crore in the same period a year ago.

In terms of quantity, the exports of bulk drugs and intermediates grew 14.26% to 1,70,801 MT during four months ended July 31, 2025, as against 1,49,484 MT reported in the same period of previous financial year.

It may be noted that the exports during the financial year ended March, 2025 reported a 2.3% growth to $4.9 billion, as compared to $4.79 billion in the previous fiscal year. Quantity, on the other hand, declined 3.2% to 4,59,449 MT as compared to 4,74,617 MT reported during April, 2023 to March, 2024.

As reported earlier, imports of bulk drugs and intermediates to India registered a growth of 5% in the month of July, 2025, while the cumulative imports for the first four months of the fiscal year witnessed a decline of 3.8%.

The imports during the month of July, stood at $410.41 million, as compared to $391.02 million in the same month of last year. The imports have been declining consecutively for the first three months of the fiscal year, reporting a 2.32% decline in April, 6.3% in May, and 12.36%in the month of June, according to data from the ministry of commerce and industry.

Import growth for the first four months of the fiscal year reported a decline of 3.8% to $1.49 billion, as compared to $1.55 billion imports during the same period of previous fiscal year.  The imports during April to July, 2024 was around 3% growth compared to $1.5 billion during the same period a year ago.

The Central government has been emphasising on reducing the imports of essential pharmaceutical raw materials such as bulk drugs, drug intermediates and key starting materials, among others, and has initiated various incentive schemes to support domestic production of these materials.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals has been promoting production of pharma raw materials in the country, including through a production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for promotion of domestic manufacturing of critical key starting materials (KSMs)/drug intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the country, to support the industry in various aspects regarding ease of doing business and availing the benefits of the Scheme.

It has also announced schemes to promote bulk drug parks in the country, as part of its efforts to promote domestic manufacturing of pharma ingredients.
