CCRS Chennai to submit prophylactic study report on ‘Kabasura Kudinner’ to Ayush ministry in November

Although efficacy of the Siddha herbal concoction, Kabasura Kudineer, to prevent or cure viral diseases like COVID-19 continues to be a matter of debate, the Central Council of Research in Siddha (CCRS) in Chennai is preparing to submit its study report of the prophylactic administration of the drug to the Union Ayush Ministry in the first week of November.
After analyzing full data, the council will conclude all stages of the study which was a collaborative initiative in association with the department of Indian medicines in Chennai, sources informed.
The siddha formulation was administered for prophylactic use in 20,000 people with primary contacts with COVID patients and a few people with mild symptoms of the pandemic in various geographical areas including Bengaluru, Delhi, Tirupati, Palayamkottai and Thirunelveli. The unit in-charges of the central council in each place were entrusted to conduct the study along with exerts in Siddha.
The research study was started in April on the basis of guidelines issued by the Ministry of Ayush and the process of administration as prophylaxis completed in August. It showed encouraging results and data analysis is going on now, said Dr K Kanakavalli, director general of the Central Council of Research in Siddha (CCRS).
“We have conducted prophylactic study of Kabasura Kudineer and several other studies including comparative study and standalone study on various siddha drugs like ‘Nilavembu Kudineer’. But Kabasura Kudineer was taken as an add-on intervention to allopathic treatment in medical colleges. In the first stage it showed good result, but in the second level some more regimen will be added. After analyzing the data CCRS will submit the report to the ministry who will put up it before an advisory panel. Upon scrutinizing the report the advisory panel will approve it. Afterwards the research council will publish the same as the result of the studies,” said the DG.
In the containment zones two herbal formulations, Kabasura Kudineer and Nilavembu Kudineer, were distributed to all the population as immunity boosters. In the recently concluded Parliament session, there was a comment about the effectiveness of ‘Kabasura Kudineer’ as a complementary medicine to boost the immune system of the people who are vulnerable to viral disease.
The ingredients include Nilavembu (Andrographis paniculata), kanduparangi (Clerodendrunserratum), chukku (dried ginger), thippili (piper longum), Ilavangam (Syzygiumaromaticum), adathodaiver (root of Justicia beddomei), cirukancoriver (Tragia involucrate), seenthil (Tinosporia cordifolia), karpooravalli (Anisochilus carnosus), koraikizhangu (Cyperus rotundus), kostam (Costusspeciosus), akkara (Anacyclus pyrethrum) vattathiruppiver (Sida acuta), mulliver (Hygrophilla auriculata) and kadukkaithol (Terminalia chebula).
Referring to the ongoing controversy over its efficacy, Dr Kanakavalli as answer to a question whether Kabasura Kudineer is a drug or immunity booster, said as per present observation the Siddha formulation can be used as a prophylactic remedy and also for the management of asymptomatic conditions and mild symptoms of COVID-19.
