As the pharmaceutical sector faces non-tariff barriers, the Union commerce ministry has sought inputs to evaluate the export and import performance of the pharmaceutical sector. Through this initiative, the government aims to address challenges posed by non-tariff barriers (NTBs) that are affecting the smooth flow of pharmaceutical trade.

Raja Bhanu, director general (DG) of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil), has urged stakeholders in the industry to submit their concerns regarding regulatory hurdles at the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and state drugs authorities.

"The pharmaceutical sector plays a vital role in India's economic growth and global healthcare ecosystem. However, we recognize that several non-tariff barriers hinder the seamless export and import of pharmaceutical products. To ensure a constructive dialogue with the Union ministry of commerce, we are seeking specific inputs from industry members," said Raja Bhanu.

Pharmexcil has assured complete confidentiality for the companies submitting their concerns, ensuring that names will not be disclosed while presenting the issues to the Ministry.

The pharmaceutical sector has long faced challenges beyond standard tariff regulations. These include lengthy and complex regulatory approvals impacting the timely export and import of drugs, state-wise variations in regulatory requirements leading to inconsistencies, delays in obtaining import clearances from CDSCO and state drug authorities, bureaucratic inefficiencies in issuing necessary permits and certifications and stringent documentation requirements that differ across jurisdictions.

The Government of India has consistently emphasized the need to facilitate pharmaceutical exports, recognizing the industry's critical contribution to global healthcare. This initiative is expected to address the challenges and formulate actionable solutions that enhance trade facilitation and regulatory efficiency.

Industry representatives have been encouraged to actively participate and ensure their suggestions are heard in shaping a regulatory framework that fosters growth and competitiveness.
