The Society for Pharmaceutical Dissolution Science (SPDS) recently unveiled Disso Asia 2025, a two-day international symposium on “Dissolution Science and Quality Drug Development”. The symposium was held in collaboration with the Indonesian FDA (BPOM RI), the Embassy of India in Jakarta, industry associations HISFARIN and QA QC Members Group of Indonesia.

It also included collaborations with leading pharmacy institutes including the Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB), Indonesia, University of Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, and Airlangga University, Indonesia.

The symposium was inaugurated by Sandeep Chakravorty, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia, and Prof. Dr Taruna Ikrar, chairperson of BPOM RI.

Dr Ikrar elaborated on his vision of Indonesia becoming a manufacturer of drugs and pharmaceuticals and bringing down imports from 96% to less than 50% in a few years from now. He mentioned that Indonesia looks forward for support from India to strengthen their inhouse manufacturing and also address reduction in cost of pharmaceuticals. He invited Indian Pharma companies to set up their manufacturing units and assured support from BPOM to facilitate fast track the permissions and approvals needed to set up their sites in Indonesia.

Guest of Honor Dr. Rajeev Raghuvanshi, Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), in his keynote address also expressed India’s willingness to collaborate with Indonesia. He in his inimical style enlightened the audience on the importance of the symposium through apt case studies, judiciously selected.

The ambassador of India Sandeep Chakravorty welcomed the invitation of Prof. Dr. Taruna Ikrar and assured him that India would be happy to support and expand the collaboration of the two countries in development of pharmaceuticals. He also invited the Indonesian FDA team to India to initiate the same. He added that the Indian experience would benefit Indonesia immensely.

Dr L Ramaswamy, secretary general, SPDS highlighted the importance of the collaborative symposium, and the myriad benefits it could bring in to Indonesia. He also mentioned that SPDS looks forward to formation of the SPDS Indonesia Chapter to ensure continuous collaboration and dissemination of knowledge on Advances in Dissolution Science, technology and related areas. Prof. Padma V Devarajan, president-SPDS elaborated on the various activities of SPDS and how industry and academic institutes could reap big benefits by collaborating with and also becoming a part of SPDS.

“SPDS is pleased to invite delegates from Indonesia for DISSO INDIA 2025 to be held on November 21 to 22, 2025, in Mumbai.  Overall DISSO ASIA in Indonesia marks the beginning of a new journey between two countries in collaboration and co-operation in the field of pharmaceuticals and health care,” Dr L Ramaswamy informed.

The symposium was enriched with talks by a gamut of speakers from across the globe on various aspects of dissolution including Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) and biowaivers, to QbD, dissolution in formulation development, different dissolution methods regulatory aspects and much more and followed by a panel discussion which would be an interactive session.

“Disso Asia 2025 was able to close successfully with the support of the various Instrumentation and associated companies like Sotax AG, ACG Associated Capsules, Borosil Scientific, Image Provision, MicroTracers, PT Gaia Science, PT Sartotech, JVR Jayata Consulting, Toraja Melo & Ahana. The plenary address was delivered by Dr Vinod P Shah, Ex US FDA Scientist and Pharma Consultant, USA who is also the Scientific Chair of Disso Asia 2025,” Dr. Ramaswamy further informed.

A highlight of the symposium was the poster session by students from different countries and the exhibition which showcased the latest in dissolution and quality of pharmaceuticals. A very successful beginning happened to DISSO ASIA in Indonesia as more than 250 delegates from industry, academia, and regulatory bodies attended the symposium.

The other eminent speakers were Dr Heni Rachmawati, ITB Bandung, Dr Matthias Wacker, National University of Singapore, Sandeep Kulakarni, Image Provision Inc., Dr Padma Devarajan, president, SPDS, Vijay Kshirsagar, CEO of Track Consulting and Past President SPDS, Prof Akhmad Kharis, University Gadjah Mada, Dra Susan Gracia Arpan, BPOM RI, Prof James Poli, University of Maryland, Dr Sandip Tiwari, BASF, Dr Alexandre Hardy, Sotax Pharma Services, France, Dr Roderick (Eric) Salenga, WHO Indonesia and Dr Patrick Sinko, Rutgers University, USA.
