Habitual offender in spurious drug case caught in Hyderabad by Telangana DCA sleuths

With the assistance of the police department, the drug control officials in Telangana have caught a habitual offender, who is a most wanted accused in several spurious drug cases filed by the drug control administration, from his lodging place and was produced before the court, sources from the DCA informed Pharmabiz. Sharing details with Pharmabiz, sources said the offender, P. Lakshmi Narsaiah, is accused of several spurious drug cases filed by the drug control department. Fifteen cases are pending against him, filed by various ADC offices. In certain cases, non-bailable arrest warrants were issued and summonses are pending in some other cases, but he was absconding. The accused was tracked from Proddutur to Hyderabad by the drug control sleuths along with police officials. While he was staying in a lodge in Kachiguda, he was caught with the help of the police Task Force in Nizamabad and produced before the judicial first class magistrate court. The accused was remanded to the central prison at Nizamabad. Officers from the DCA including Dr. N. Narsaiah, Assistant Director, Nizamabad, V. Srikanth, drugs inspector at Nizamabad Urban, and A. Raja Reddy, drugs inspector at Kamareddy joined with the officers from the Commissioner’s Task Force. In a communiqué issued by the drug control department, the officials informed the public that spurious drugs are a major threat to public health and they place the patient’s health at grave risk. Spurious drugs not only fail to cure the disease but over time, create disastrous consequences for the patient. Recently, under the leadership of director general VB Kamalasan Reddy the drugs control department has intensified the inspections and raids in drug sale outlets, wholesale premises and manufacturing companies all over Telangana to detect spurious and counterfeit drugs. For the strict enforcement of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act he has formed a Task Force with the state police and conducts inspections at the sources of spurious drugs manufacturing and sales.
In the first week of July, two spurious drugs, ‘Vertin 8’ and ‘Vertin 16’ labeled as products manufactured by the reputed drug manufacturing company, Abbot India Ltd, were seized by the department in two raids conducted at two places and on July 23, the officials raided an unauthorized godown owned by Aspen Biopharma and seized stocks of illegally manufactured bulk drugs worth rupees one crore kept inside it. On 26th, the office of the DG filed a case against one Himachal Pradesh based drug manufacturer under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 for violation of Drug Price Control Orders (DPCO). Every month a minimum of three cases of spurious drugs are filed by the drug department.
