Indian pharma is increasingly moving towards specialty drug delivery solutions that combine therapeutic efficacy with greater convenience and patient-centricity. As complex therapies become more prevalent, companies are exploring innovative delivery technologies designed to improve treatment outcomes, simplify administration, and enhance the overall patient experience. This shift reflects a broader evolution in Indian healthcare, where innovation in drug delivery is becoming a key enabler of more accessible, effective, and personalized treatment.

Anurag Kumar, CMD, Biodeal Pharmaceuticals pointed out that the future of specialty drug delivery will be defined by therapies that improve efficacy while making treatment more convenient and patient-centric. As healthcare moves towards more targeted interventions, nasal and injectable formulations are gaining prominence because they offer advantages in drug delivery and require highly specialized development and manufacturing capabilities.

Formulation science is driving the next wave of innovation. Increasingly, the focus is not just on developing new molecules but on enhancing the way, existing therapies are delivered to improve efficacy, patient adherence, and overall treatment outcomes. Nasal drug delivery is a strong example of this evolution. Once associated primarily with over-the-counter products, it is now being explored for complex therapeutic areas, including central nervous system disorders, systemic drug delivery, and other specialty treatments, reflecting the growing importance of advanced formulation technologies in modern healthcare, he added.

It is here high quality standards is no longer a checkpoint at the end of the manufacturing process, but it is the foundation on which every process is built. Whether it is adopting digital manufacturing technologies, strengthening data integrity, or investing in skilled talent, manufacturers that embed these capabilities into their operations will be better equipped to meet evolving global expectations, Kumar told Pharmabiz.

As pharmaceutical innovation advances, demand is shifting toward manufacturing partners with deep technical expertise, robust quality systems, and the ability to handle specialized products. These capabilities require sustained investment and are becoming an increasingly important differentiator in the global market, he noted.

Over the last two decades, we have built one of India's leading capabilities in nasal sprays and dry powder inhalers (DPIs), collaborating with pharmaceutical companies to develop and manufacture complex respiratory and nasal formulations. This experience has given us strong expertise in managing the scientific, regulatory, and manufacturing complexities associated with specialty drug delivery, he said.

Building on this foundation, we are expanding into sterile injectables, applying the same focus on quality, precision, and regulatory excellence to address the growing demand for complex dosage forms. As pharmaceutical innovation accelerates, companies with proven expertise across specialty drug delivery platforms will be best positioned to support the next generation of therapies, said Kumar.

The CDMO landscape in India is steadily bifurcating. On one side are large-scale manufacturers focused on high-volume production, while on the other is a growing segment of precision-driven CDMOs specializing in complex formulations and niche therapeutic categories. From a formulation and CDMO perspective, the strength of the final product is only as reliable as the API supply chain supporting it. As India's CDMO sector continues to grow globally, strengthening the domestic API ecosystem alongside formulation capabilities will be critical to building a truly resilient, end-to-end pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem, he said.

India's ambitions of becoming a global pharmaceutical manufacturing hub depends not only on formulation excellence but also on the strength of its API ecosystem. The quality, consistency, and reliability of finished formulations are intrinsically linked to the quality of the APIs that go into them, said Kumar.
