Offering land and well-established building, the additional chief secretary in charge of health and family welfare in Jharkhand has written to the Union Ayush Ministry to establish one Ayush Drug Testing and Research Laboratory (ADTRL) in the state for the benefit of the whole traditional and herbal drug manufacturers of the eastern and north eastern part of the country.

Jharkhand government is ready to provide sufficient land area and a ready building in Dumka, the second largest city in the state, for setting up the lab. The state government hopes that if one sophisticated ADTRL is set up in the state, Jharkhand will become the hub of traditional and modern pharmaceuticals for the entire eastern country, along with the ongoing project of the pharma park project at Bijupara near Ranchi is completed.

Arun Kumar Singh, the ACS, in his letter to the union Ayush secretary says that the government owns a well-established building with more than 10,000 square feet area in Dumka which can be utilized for the laboratory purpose. He said since the infrastructure is ready to erect the machinery the Ayush Ministry can easily set up one of its three major labs in Jharkhand for the benefit of more than 25 crore people of the eastern area.

The secretary sent his senior drug control officer, Suman Kumar Tiwari to Ahmedabad last week to attend the global Ayush innovation and investment summit organized by the Union Ayush Ministry in Gandhinagar in Gujarat, and to discuss with the Ayush secretary Dr. Rajesh Kotecha about establishing one laboratory in Jharkhand. After attending the summit, Tiwari told Pharmabiz that he was sure to get the nod of the central government in opening an Ayush lab in Jharkhand. He will further hold discussion with the Ayush secretary next week.

According to Arun Kumar Singh, the state of Jharkhand is a rich repository of natural resources and herbs to produce ASU medicines. As per the economic survey 20-21 conducted by the state government, the state’s natural resources and herbs can produce more than 52,000 tonnes of traditional medicines. Major medicinal plants like arjun chaal, sarapgandha, kalmegh, indrajou, bahera fruits, amala fruits, sona chal, satavar, dhou flower, harra, chirata, nagarmotha, van tulsi seeds, palash flower and chakor are mostly found in the minor forests and hilly areas of Jharkhand.

He said in his letter that at present there are 21 ASU drug manufacturing units but the number will increase manifold because of the supportive measures being taken by the state government.

The chief secretary further informed the central government that currently there is no sophisticated drug testing lab for ASU and H drugs operational in the eastern and north eastern part of India. Although states like Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and the northern states have ASU drug manufacturers, no dedicated lab has been established in any state for testing Ayush products. Because of this, the Ayush drug manufacturers face a lot of problems and the industry cannot develop in business.

Suman Tiwari said there are 113 Ayush drug manufacturing companies in Bihar, 200 units in WB, 100 companies in Odisha and 65 units in the north east. He said the east and north eastern states have rich natural resources and herbs for traditional medicines, but the sector is not developing due to lack of encouragement and technical support. According to him, the south and north Indian Ayush manufacturers are using raw materials for their products from the east and eastern states.

It is learnt that the Union Ayush Ministry has the plan to start three major drug testing and research laboratories, and one has already been put aside for Gujarat and another one is likely to be set up in Pondicherry. Jharkhand will be the third state for the third project.
