The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) has received an important communication from the Embassy of India in Brazil, seeking feedback on a proposed tariff enhancement by the Department of Commercial Strategy of the Foreign Trade Chamber (CAMEX), Government of Brazil.
The proposal is expected to impact a significant number of products, and Indian exporters, particularly those dealing in pharmaceuticals and chemicals, have been urged to review the proposal and share their concerns. According to a recent review by the Indian Embassy, 61 items out of 100 products under consideration for tariff increases have been identified as concerns for India.
The proposed tariff hikes are part of a broader strategy by the Brazilian government to encourage local production and strengthen its industrial base.
Director General (DG) Pharmexcil, K Raja Bhanu has informed that Pharmexcil has requested its member exporters to provide feedback on the proposed tariff increases. This feedback is crucial for representing India’s interests during discussions with Brazilian authorities. Exporters are requested to submit their inputs by filling out the attached Excel form and emailing it to romumbai@pharmexcil.com, with a copy to director.romumbai@pharmexcil.com and regulatory@pharmexcil.com.
Key factors behind the tariff review include enhancing national production capability: CAMEX is assessing whether domestic industries have sufficient capacity to meet local demand, reducing the need for imports and alignment with Brazil’s Industrial Policy: The Brazilian government is promoting an industrial policy aimed at enhancing local manufacturing, particularly in targeted sectors.
Several products that could face increased tariffs include pigments and their preparations, mineral oils (vaseline and paraffin), sulfonic acids of linear alkylbenzenes and their salts, organic surface-active agents, non-ionic, polypropylene and polyethylene in primary forms, stearyl alcohol (industrial fatty alcohols). For a complete list of affected products, Indian exporters are advised to assess the list of products with respective HS Codes.
“As Brazil moves to strengthen its local production, it is essential for Indian exporters to respond promptly to these proposed changes. Pharmexcil is committed to safeguarding the interests of its members and encourages all affected businesses to provide feedback to ensure their concerns are represented effectively,” Bhanu concluded.
