The Government of Pondicherry has given in-principle approval to the proposal submitted by the drugs control department for establishing a dedicated Ayush Drug Testing Laboratory (ADTL) in the Union territory with funding from the union Ayush Ministry.
According to drug controller E. Ananda Krishnan, the chief minister has already given the in-principle approval for the proposal he had submitted to the government for setting up a state-of-the-art drug testing laboratory to ensure the quality of Ayush medicines.
Since the lab is set up in an existing building having 3,000 sq feet area at the health directorate complex, the Rs. 3 crore to be funded by the Ministry of Ayush can be spent for purchasing the required equipment and instruments, the DCA hopes. The DC will hold meetings with the MoA officials in New Delhi next week to speed up things in this regard, he told Pharmabiz.
With the setting up of the lab under the central sector scheme (CSS) of the National Ayush Mission NAM), it will become the first Ayush laboratory in the Union territory dedicated for Ayush drugs manufactured and marketed in the four regions of the UT. Along with the proposal for the laboratory project, the drug controller had submitted a separate one for strengthening the Ayush wing under the DCA by recruiting a sufficient number of enforcement officials. He said the government plans to appoint more drug inspectors in the Ayush wing which is now running short of regulatory officers.
Further to this development, the drugs control department is taking steps to coordinate the Ayurveda, Siddh and Unani (ASU) manufacturers to form an Ayush cluster in order to attract more centrally sponsored Ayush projects to the UT. Ananda Krishnan said the union Ayush Ministry will give more funds for developing cluster projects, building construction and medicinal cultivation under the national Ayush mission. He said his aim is to obtain maximum funds from the Ayush Ministry under various schemes.
Dr. C A Ravi, president of the Siddha, Unani, Homoeopathy and Ayurveda drug manufacturers of Pondicherry (SUHA) has responded that his association is aggressively taking steps for the formation of the cluster as early as possible. He said the drug controller has special interest in developing the Ayush sector and the government also gives full support to the drug makers. The number of ASU drug makers will be increased by adding more manufacturers from Mahe, Yanam and Karakkal. The present number of ASU companies is 45 and all the units have GMP facilities.
Dr D Subrahmaniam, treasurer of SUHA and an EC member to PDMA, said a large number of established Ayush manufacturers from Kerala have assured support to SUHA’s efforts to form the cluster. He said the traditional drug makers of Pondicherry have a very exhaustive plan to develop the Ayush sector and promote an Ayush culture among people with the support of public health institutions. He said the cluster will be formed in another 12 months.
