Restriction on remdesivir and amphotericin B exports to continue: Health minister

Union health minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has said that the restriction on remdesivir and amphotericin B exports will continue as the possibility of the third wave of coronavirus is still looming large in the country.
Speaking to a delegation of the Federation of Pharmaceutical Merchant Exporters and Allied Products (FPME) recently, Dr Mandaviya said, “looking forward to the third wave of Covid-19, the restriction on remdesivir and amphotericin B exports will continue and will look into how merchant exporters can be accommodated under advanced license”.
Earlier, FPME had made a representation to Dr Mandaviya on the issue of removing restrictions on the export of remdesivir and amphotericin B. FPME also took up with the minister the issue of promotion of Indian Pharmacopoeia to promote exports of pharmaceutical products in the country. FPME wanted the Central government to take initiatives to make Indian Pharmacopoeia to be recognised internationally for exporters and it should be made part of every trade agreement with independent country.
“The meeting was fruitful. Dr Mandaviya has acknowledged our representation for remdesivir and amphotericin B exports and discussed the issue in detail,” FPME added.
Remdesivir was originally developed to treat hepatitis C, and was subsequently investigated for Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus infections before being studied as a post-infection treatment for Covid-19.
Amphotericin B is an antifungal medication used for serious fungal infections and leishmania. The fungal infections it is used to treat include mucormycosis, aspergillosis, blastomycosis, candidiasis, coccidioidomycosis, and cryptococcosis.
Merchant exporters are instrumental in a boosting of country’s exports and generates the foreign exchange for the Country like normal exports and is mainly engaged in export of goods and not services.
Merchant exporters account for around 35 per cent of the total exports, help boost outbound merchandise shipments.
Incorporated on March 30, 2019, FPME today has 200 members in a span of just two years and is planning to add 500 more this year. As per Pharmexcil data, there are approximately 2,000 merchant exporters in the country. The main objective of FPME is to represent pharmaceutical and allied products merchant exporters in government, semi-government, regulatory, legislative and other trade and industry bodies for policy development and interventions as may be necessary in the interest of country’s trade.
