The Union commerce ministry, Department of Commerce (DoC), has initiated a fresh effort to strengthen pharmaceutical cooperation between India and Taiwan by sharing a list of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) identified by the Taiwanese side for potential collaboration with Indian pharmaceutical companies.
Taking the initiative forward, the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) has invited Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from its member companies to assess industry participation and facilitate future engagement with the concerned authorities.
The move is aimed at identifying Indian exporters and manufacturers with the capability or willingness to collaborate with Taiwanese stakeholders in the production and supply of selected APIs across therapeutic segments, including antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs, respiratory medicines, nutritional supplements, anti-inflammatory medicines and oncology products.
According to Pharmexcil director general (DG) Raja Bhanu, the current exercise is intended to measure the level of interest within the Indian pharmaceutical industry before taking discussions forward with the relevant authorities.
"The DoC has shared a list of APIs identified by the Taiwanese side for exploring potential collaboration with Indian pharmaceutical companies," DG Pharmexcil informed.
He added that Pharmexcil is inviting EoIs from companies that have manufacturing capabilities or are interested in collaborating with Taiwanese stakeholders for the listed APIs.
Officials clarified that companies interested in participating must submit their details through an online form.
The list of APIs identified for potential collaboration covers a wide range of therapeutic applications. It includes amikacin, bacitracin, chlortetracycline hydrochloride, doxycycline hydrochloride, and doxycycline hyclate under antibiotics. Cardiovascular medicines such as captopril and esmolol hydrochloride have also been included.
The proposed collaboration extends to respiratory medicines such as choline theophyllinate, dihydroxypropyl theophylline, benproperine phosphate, and carbetapentane citrate, along with nutritional supplements including calcium ascorbate.
Other APIs identified include ammonium chloride for phlegm reduction, anethole trithione for gallstone treatment, benzoic acid as an antifungal agent, camphor powder, citric acid, edetate calcium disodium, ethacridine lactate, fenbufen, and fedratinib dihydrochloride monohydrate, an anticancer drug.
According to experts, “The initiative highlights the growing focus on international partnerships in the pharmaceutical sector, particularly in strengthening supply chains, expanding manufacturing capabilities and promoting technology collaboration. It also reflects efforts by the DoC and Pharmexcil to create new opportunities for Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers in overseas markets while encouraging closer industry engagement with Taiwanese partners.”
“Industry stakeholders are expected to respond to the EoI in the coming weeks, following which the information will be shared with the concerned authorities to facilitate the next phase of discussions between Indian and Taiwanese participants,” an official informed.
