In a move that significantly shifts Tamil Nadu’s pharmaceutical trajectory, Tindivanam Pharma Industrial Park is now officially open for manufacturing development.

Following the formal inauguration by chief minister M K Stalin on February 4, the state-of-the-art cluster has been declared fully ready for investors. With the completion of all primary land and civil infrastructure, the state government has signalled that individual pharmaceutical companies can now move beyond planning and begin the physical construction of their manufacturing units.

The official launch marks the culmination of a journey that began in May 2023 when the chief minister laid the foundation stone. Developed by the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (TANSIDCO) at a total project cost of Rs. 87.68 crore, the 111-acre park in Villupuram district is designed to be a high-tech manufacturing hub. The completion of this infrastructure fulfils a long-standing demand from the state's pharmaceutical sector for a specialized ecosystem that supports rapid industrial growth.

Speaking to Pharmabiz, J. Jayaseelan, chairman of the Tindivanam Pharma Park Association (SPV) and chairman of the TN IDMA, said, ‘The Park is a dream project of the Tamil Nadu pharmaceutical manufacturers, and we are thrilled to see it reach this operational stage’. Commenting on the progress, he revealed the high level of industry confidence, noting that 38 out of the 40 available plots have already been sold out. ‘Most of the investors are from within Tamil Nadu, reflecting the local industry's commitment to expanding our manufacturing footprint. The park is now positioned to benefit the entire pharmaceutical sector in the state’, he added.

Infrastructure readiness was the primary highlight of the inauguration. All internal road networks, essential water supply systems, and initial electrical grids are now fully operational, allowing companies to secure building permits and break ground immediately. Jayaseelan confirmed that the timeline for common utilities is equally robust. While roads are finished, the water facilities and effluent treatment plant (ETP) are slated for total completion by April, with the common warehouse and quality control laboratory expected to be ready by June this year.

The cluster is anchored by sophisticated common facility centres (CFCs) designed to reduce the capital burden on individual micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These facilities include a common effluent treatment plant with zero liquid discharge, a common sewage treatment plant, and a common testing and training hall. By sharing these critical resources, the 40 companies housed within the park, primarily focusing on pharmaceutical formulations and nutraceuticals, can maintain global compliance standards while optimizing their operational costs.

Strategically located in Villupuram district, the park leverages its proximity to both Chennai and Pondicherry, providing seamless access to major logistics hubs and a skilled labour pool. This location is vital for the region's 400 existing manufacturing units, many of which are looking to scale their operations.

The economic impact of the project is projected to be substantial, with the potential to create over 6,000 direct and 10,000 indirect employment opportunities in the region. The project received generous support through the Mega Cluster Development Scheme, with the state government and the MSME ministry, working aggressively to ensure the project met its developmental milestones. This initiative is seen as a key pillar in Tamil Nadu's goal to become a global leader in drug manufacturing and export.

As investors now begin to start work for building construction, the Tindivanam Pharma Park stands as a testament to the state's proactive industrial policy. The focus of the investor companies now shifts to the individual manufacturers who will transform this 111-acre site into a bustling centre of pharmaceutical innovation.
